Congratulations Betty Gerner!
Tami Jackson, left, Executive Director of Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut, nominated Betty Gerner, right, for one of the United Way Community Builders award. Gerner volunteers at Literacy Volunteers, drawing on her experience working with the Peace Corps when she was younger. While stationed in the South Pacific, she worked with the Tongans, teaching them English.
“I know what it’s like to be a stranger in a strange land,” Gerner said. “This is my way of giving back.” Betty has devoted her life to literacy, and is perhaps the only Milfordite who speaks Tongan! What an incredible gift to our community.

STRATFORD, Conn. — Literacy Volunteers of Southern Connecticut officially opened a satellite office Wednesday at Stratford Public Library, offering a range of free, individualized tutoring to a growing population of adults and children.
Based in Milford, the group serves people in several communities. Opening the Stratford location will give those seeking to build skills a convenient alternative, said Tami Jackson, executive director.
“We won’t turn anyone away,” she said.
The agency has already held a training class for tutors and plans to offer another class this fall.
LVSCT focuses on one-on-one tutoring because those seeking its services come for a variety of reasons. Some need basic conversation skills, others are studying for a GED or are in citizenship preparation. Click to read more...

This is Noah.
Noah held a book drive in his town and donated 170 books to the Center last week. He is currently a 7th grader at Avon Middle School in Avon, CT.
The reason he chose to donate the books to LVSCT is because he liked the personal approach of how we send kids books on their birthday.
Thank you Noah. What a #superkid!!!
