From the Desk of Fr. Mike Nacius, Pastor

|
--------May the joy of the resurrection continue to strengthen and guide our lives of faith, sharing peace and hope with one another and our world.
As we come together in celebration of Easter joy we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension of the Lord. May 15th and 16th. The observance of the Feast of the Ascension has been transferred from 40 days after Jesus’ resurrection, to the 7th Sunday of Easter in the Archdiocese of Chicago. We conclude the celebration of the Season of Easter on the Feast of Pentecost. This year Pentecost falls on May 23rd, the final day of the 50 days of joyous and glorious Easter season.
--In the “Year of St. Joseph” I am inviting men of the Church of St. Mary’s to learn more about a program titled, “That Man Is You”. I hope that men would hear God speaking to them and encourage them to become involved and part of the program. I am inviting men to a Zoom Meeting on Tuesday, May 25th to learn more about the program. You can access the ZOOM meeting at:
“That Man is You” Zoom Meeting Link –
May 25th, 2021 - 7 pm - 7:45 pm – Presentation - 7:45 pm - Optional Q&A
Please mark your calendars for May 25th at 7:00 PM. I pray that you will be able to join me and other men of St. Mary’s to learn more about bringing “That Man is You” to our parish. I look forward to hearing from you. Please let me know if you will be able to Zoom in later this month. You can reach out to Robert Machak at rmachak@aol.com or me if you would like to learn more about helping bring this program to the Church of St. Mary in the fall.
I was driving through town and while stopped in traffic I saw a woman placing a green ribbon around trees on the parkway. Rolling down the window I asked her what the ribbon was for? She shared with me that May is national Mental Health Awareness Month. Immediately I knew that would be part of one of my bulletin articles.
|
|
--------Some of the information listed on their website includes these statements: Each year millions of Americans face the reality of living with a mental illness. During May, NAMI joins the national movement to raise awareness about mental health. Each year we fight stigma, provide support, educate the public and advocate for policies that support people with mental illness and their families.
For 2021’s Mental Health Awareness Month, NAMI will continue to amplify the message of “You Are Not Alone.” We will use this time to focus on the healing value of connecting in safe ways, prioritizing mental health and acknowledging that it’s okay to not be okay through NAMI’s blog, personal stories, videos, digital toolkits, social media engagements and national events.
--------Together, we can realize our shared vision of a nation where anyone affected by mental illness can get the appropriate support and quality of care to live healthy, fulfilling lives — a nation where no one feels alone in their struggle.
--------Mental Health Fast Facts - These numbers are only a few of the reasons why it’s important to take part in promoting our awareness events. Please use these facts and others to encourage discussions with your community, whether through social media or other forms of outreach.
Individual Impact
- 20.6% of U.S. adults (51.5 million people) experienced mental illness in 2019, but only 43.8% of them received treatment.
- 1 in 5 U.S. adults experience mental illness each year, but less than half get treatment.
- 5.2% of U.S. adults (13.1 million people) experienced serious mental illness in 2019, but only 65.5% of them received treatment.
- 1 in 20 U.S. adults experience a serious mental illness each year, but less than two-thirds get treatment.
- 16.5% of U.S. youth aged 6–17 (7.7 million people) experienced a mental health disorder in 2016, but only 50.6% of them received treatment.
- 1 in 6 U.S. youth experience a mental health condition each year, but only half get treatment.
- 50% of all lifetime mental illness begins by age 14, and 75% by age 24.
- Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death among people aged 10–34 and the 10th leading cause of death overall in the U.S.
- The overall suicide rate in the U.S. has increased by 35% since 1999.
COVID has had an untold impact on the emotional health of children and adults of all ages. The lack of socializing, the quarantining and isolating has impacted society. There is help and there is hope are our guiding principles to support people struggling with issues of mental health. May we be a source of encouragement and support to those in our family, those in our parish and those in our society that face these issues on a daily basis.
In our rich tradition of faith, this prayer to saint Dymphna, printed below, succinctly identifies her as the well-known patron saint of those with mental or nervous disorders or mental illness.
“Good Saint Dymphna, great wonder-worker in every affliction of mind and body, I humbly implore your powerful intercession with Jesus through Mary, the Health of the Sick, in my present need. (Mention it.) Saint Dymphna, martyr of purity, patroness of those who suffer with nervous and mental afflictions, beloved child of Jesus and Mary, pray to them for me and obtain my request.
(Pray one Our Father, one Hail Mary and one Glory Be.) Saint Dymphna, Virgin and Martyr, pray for us.”
May God bless us with hearts and lives of hope and mercy shared with the world this Easter Season.

GENERAL GUIDELINES
Below are a few guidelines for being in the Church. There are numerous signs around the exterior and interior of the Church to help facilitate these new patterns. Due to the limited capacity, number of parishioners and our reduced Mass schedule, we ask that you sign up for a weekend Mass every other week and one weekday Mass to allow others to be able to pray in the Church and celebrate Mass in person. If the day before, there are still open slots, you may sign up.
-
Church Entrance: The south door, near the elevator, is the only entrance into the Church. Please form a line along the exterior south wall of the Church and a volunteer greeter will let you in.
-
Arrive On Time: South Entrance doors will open 15 minutes prior to the start of Mass and it is strongly encouraged you arrive by the time the doors open as time is needed to Greet visitors and allow Ushers to seat you.
-
Entrance Doors Close: South Entrance doors will close at the start of Mass to allow volunteers to attend Mass. Thank you for allowing yourself time to arrive.
-
Volunteers: Parish volunteers will be on site to help direct and guide all of us as we begin to open and re-enter the Church.
-
Masks/Face Covering: Mask or face coverings are required to be worn by all individuals at all times while in the Church building.
-
Hand Sanitizer: Sanitize your hands as you enter the Church building.
-
Social Distance: Maintain proper social distancing of 6 feet apart, unless you are with somebody who lives in the same household as you. There are floor markings to help facilitate this.
-
100 Persons Maximum: A maximum of 100 individuals (excluding the priest and other ministers) are allowed in the Church at one time. In inclement weather, personal vehicles would be a necessary shelter while waiting.
-
Church Exit: The north doors onto the main plaza will be the only exit from the Church (unless you require use of the elevator).
-
Church East Entrance - Emergency Exit Only: Please do not use the East doors onto the stairways for either entering or exiting.
-
Surface Sanitizing: All surfaces touched by persons are sanitized prior to the next opening of the Church.
-
Restrooms Unavailable: For the safety of all, the restrooms will not be available, unless it's an emergency.
-
Registration Required: Registration is required through SignUp Genius for Public Mass, Adoration, Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. 85 slots will be available online and 15 slots will be available by calling the office for those who do not have access to technology.
-
SignUp Availability: SignUps for the next week's schedule will be available through SignUp Genius after 9:00am on Friday's. Registration is required for Public Mass & Prayer, Adoration, Weddings, Funerals and Baptisms. If you need assistance, please contact the Parish Center Office during normal business hours at receptionist@churchofstmary.org or call 847-234-0205. Leave a message and they will call you back.
VOLUNTEERS
Volunteer Tasks:
- Greeters will assist in managing the flow of congregants as they enter the church, participate in the liturgy/sacrament, and exit the church.
- Team members will combine some of the functions of an usher, such as directing participants to appropriate seating/waiting areas, but will include additional responsibilities, including, but not limited to, making sure attendees use hand sanitizer upon entering, are wearing a mask, and are reminded not to enter if ill.
- Given the circumstances, greeters will need to be tactful and firm paying careful attention to all people on-site. To support parish greeter teams, rudimentary training tips on handling difficult situations will be provided.
- Volunteers will ensure that: all supplies needed for each sacramental celebration/gathering are ready for use, entrances and exits are marked and propped physically open prior to attendees' arrival/departure, and windows are opened.
- Volunteers will help maintain and sanitize essential and trafficked areas of the church after the church has been used. Masks and gloves will be provided, if necessary, in addition to approved cleaning/disinfecting supplies.
May God grant you peace and comfort in this time.

May 16, 2021: Gospel Reflection for Ascension of the Lord
|
|
Both our first reading and the gospel focus on Jesus’ ascension into heaven. In the first reading we see that Jesus has gathered the apostles and will commission them to take over his mission and ministry. They still don’t fully understand what being the Messiah really means. We can see this because they ask the risen Christ if he is now going to restore the kingdom of Israel. They still are thinking as people of the world, where hierarchy status and power, are what is important. Christ knows that it is about inclusivity, equality for all not just one group of people or nation. As Christ commissions the apostles to carry on his mission he is sure to let them know the mission is not just for the people of Israel but for everyone, to the ends of the earth! The love and salvation from God is for each and every one of us! It is hard not to be awestruck at the enormity of God’s love for us. In fact, I don’t think it even possible to fully comprehend God’s love for us. God is amazingly generous indeed!
As Christ ascends into heaven he gives those gathered the Holy Spirit to help guide them. The Holy Spirit is always within us, which is such a comfort. We may be social distancing and some people are doing this alone in their homes, yet we are never really alone. We have the love of God and the Trinity with us at all times. We most easily access that love when we spend time alone in prayer and reflection. What is God showing us today? How can we open up more to allow the Spirit to guide us and work through us?
In the gospel we again see Jesus is commissioning the disciples as he does in the first reading, telling them to go make disciples of the whole world. When we are baptized, we as individuals die in the waters and rise as part of the community of Christ. We no longer live for ourselves, rather we live to serve God. Jesus says that those who do not believe are condemned. However, it is not God that condemns them; rather they condemn themselves for not being open to what God is offering. For those who do believe, how will their lives change? Now that they do the will of God, they are able to heal in God’s name, relate to people on a new level about the love of God and things they felt as obstacles before have been removed. They will always find a way to spread the word and will of God to others. Will they be able to handle snakes knowing they won’t be hurt or can they drink poison without fear of physical death? No. That’s not the point. The point is that with the Holy Spirit people feel free to speak the truth for physical death has no hold over us. This Sunday we not only celebrate the Ascension of the Lord into heaven, but the commissioning of the disciples and our own commissioning! It is an exciting time for us all!

Bereavement Ministry Training
The Corporal works and the Spiritual works of mercy are at the core of who we are as Catholics Christian. They not only identify who we are as a people; charitable, caring, compassionate and generous, they also identify the behaviors which help us to live our lives as true disciples of Jesus Christ. An unknown author was quoted as saying “People see what we do, God sees why.”
All of us have or will experience the tragic loss of a friend or loved one in our lives. It is at these times when we, as a Christian community, need to draw close to each other and our loving God for support and comfort. If you have been a recipient of the care and support shared by our Bereavement Ministry or just want to help others who may be suffering, this is your opportunity.

CONGRATULATIONS David Wieters on receiving the St. John the Baptist Award at today’s virtual Principals’ Meeting! Your award is very well deserved…You are truly making a difference through your exceptional leadership! As announced, we do actually have a trophy to accompany this award. We’re still putting together plans on how to get the trophy to you…The current plan is for someone from the OCS Leadership Team to visit your school in the near future to deliver the trophy. More information about this is coming. In the meantime, I hope this award provides affirmation of your hard work, leadership, and dedication.
This award is given to principals who are unafraid to innovate to improve their school. Like John the Baptist, they “Stick their Necks Out”, taking risks through courageous decisions and creativity. Not only have award recipients innovated, but their efforts have succeeded in positively benefitting the students in their care.

Our next soup kitchen date is May 21. The menu has changed and we are now serving a hot meal. While our numbers are unpredictable, we are planning for 100 take-home meals, based on our guest numbers for the last several months.
Thanks to all who helped provide a beautiful roast chicken dinner for our guests last month. We had plenty of food, and it was really a delicious meal for our guests to take home with them. Also, thanks to everyone’s generosity last month, we have enough hot cocoa mix to get to the summer and we will not need any more.
We will purchase the meat and potatoes for the meal, but would appreciate donations of the following items:
- Frozen vegetables – either green beans or corn, please
- Fruit – apples, tangerines, oranges
- Granola bars
- Pre-washed salad greens
- Cherry tomatoes
To ensure that we have complete meals for all our guests, please contact Ellen Tierney in advance to let her know what you would like to provide, and ensure that it is still needed. This will give us time to fill in any items which are not donated. Also, it will be necessary for all contributions to be dropped off at Ellen’s no later than 1:00 pm on Friday, March 19. If that timing is not feasible, please contact Ellen to arrange an alternate time. Ellen is at 150 Norwich Court [Tangley Oaks] in Lake Bluff. You may call her 847.295.4649 or email her at ellenkelly@comcast.net. Thank you for your concern for our guests – they are extremely grateful for what we can do for them.
