Background:
- The MAHA Commission was established by President Trump through a White House Executive Order in February to “advise and assist President Trump on how best to exercise his authority to address childhood chronic disease.”
- The MAHA Commission is chaired by Secretary of Health and Human Services RFK Jr., with the Assistant to the President for Domestic Policy Vince Hayley serving as Executive Director and numerous other Cabinet officials named to the Commission, including but not limited to USDA Secretary Rollins and EPA Administrator Zeldin.
- By May 24, the Commission will release an initial assessment (IA) to identify the nature of childhood chronic disease in the U.S. and compare the U.S. to other nations.
- By August 12, the Commission will submit a strategy with policy recommendations based on the IA.
While we support the commission’s mission to improve health, the agribusiness community is concerned that misinformation about pesticides and other modern agricultural practices could negatively impact farmers, increase food costs, and threaten food security. The EPA has strict rules and guidelines to ensure pesticides are safe and used responsibly, and the Commission must take a balanced, science-based approach in their review.
