Contra Costa Health Awarded $98M in Prop 1 Dollars for Three Projects

Contra Costa Health has secured about $98 million in state funding to build three new facilities to better serve county residents in need of mental health and substance use recovery services.

The funding comes from California’s Behavioral Health Continuum Infrastructure Program (BHCIP), a multi-year state initiative to improve behavioral healthcare infrastructure paid through Proposition 1.

The Contra Costa projects awarded are:

Delta Recovery Center, Oakley - A campus to include a 16 bed-adult residential treatment center and a 16-bed Mental Health Rehabilitation Center.

Los Medanos Recovery Center, Pittsburg - A hub including a sobering center, crisis triage center, withdrawal management program and outpatient behavioral healthcare services.

Sherman Recovery Center, Pleasant Hill - A 16-bed adult residential treatment and transitional residential facility designed to support adults with behavioral health needs in a structured setting.

“We are grateful to Gov. Newsom and DHCS for recognizing the need to invest in this kind of infrastructure in Contra Costa County,” said Candace Andersen, Board Chair. “We desperately need more beds for residential care and treatment.”

Statewide, Proposition 1 funding is expected to create over 5,000 residential treatment beds and expand outpatient capacity by 21,800, with a focus on helping individuals who are homeless or at risk of institutionalization.

Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s Weed Abatement Deadline June 1st

As vegetation throughout the county starts to lose its moisture and is more prone to burn; parcels located throughout Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s jurisdiction that are not being maintained become more susceptible to exterior fire. These fires are able to grow rapidly in size and intensity when hazardous vegetation and combustible debris are allowed to accumulate.

It is a parcel owner’s responsibility to eliminate exterior fire hazards on their parcel; which may also endanger their neighbors and the community at large. Every parcel owner, regardless of property type – including residential, commercial, and vacant land — is ultimately responsible for managing the hazardous vegetation on their parcel and to ensure the hazardous vegetation meets Contra Costa County Fire Protection District’s Minimum Weed Abatement Standards.

Invasive Mosquitoes Found in
Contra Costa County
The Contra Costa Mosquito and Vector Control District has once again identified an invasive mosquito species, Aedes aegypti, which is capable of transmitting the pathogens that can cause Zika virus, Dengue fever, and Yellow fever. The latest detection was at a residential property in the City of Antioch, in the same area where the District found invasive mosquitoes late last year.
Aedes aegypti mosquitoes are very small (about 1/4 inch), with black bodies and pearly white stripes and spots. These mosquitoes lay sticky eggs above the water line in any size container that holds water, including potted plants or other outdoor containers. Because of their disease risk and the ability to grow from egg to adult in even very small amounts of water, it is critically important that residents work with the District to control these mosquitoes, to prevent them from becoming established here.
The most important thing residents can do to prevent mosquitoes on their own properties is to dump out any amount of standing water from any container, including buckets, toys, tires, fountains, flower pot saucers, pet bowls, and report unmaintained swimming pools to the District.
