Grades and Attendance
As we approach the end of the semester, please be sure to check your student's grades and attendance on a daily basis. There are still five (5) weeks to go in the semester, so there is still time for your student to work with his or her teacher(s).

While teachers, and sometimes multiple teachers, will contact you if your student is not doing well or is declining, you do not need to wait for them, please feel free to email your student's teacher(s) with concerns. If your student is not doing well in multiple classes, please note that you will be contacted multiple times.

If you need help in accessing your student's grades, please visit the "For Families" section of our website and click on the "Infinite Campus" tab on the right.
Then simply follow the directions there.

Thank you,

English Department
Dear Hinsdale South students, parents, and guardians:

On behalf of the Hinsdale South English Department, I would like to introduce you to the 2023 Summer Reading Program. Our hope is that students can take some time over the summer to recapture the pleasure of losing themselves in a book.

Hinsdale South English would like to partner with parents to encourage students to read over the long break. We are not mandating that students read specified books. Instead, we encourage students to pursue their individual reading preferences and passions. As a starting point, Hinsdale South recommends the 2023 Lincoln Award books nominated by teens, teachers, and librarians across Illinois. Additionally, the Association of Illinois High School Librarians keeps an archive of previously-nominated titles that students and parents may choose to reference for additional titles. Parents and students can find these Lincoln Award Novels at the Indian Prairie Public Library and other local libraries.

Thank you and happy reading!

Ms. Lisa A. Elo
English Department Chair

ECO Club Students Win Recognition
During its meeting on Tuesday, the DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee presented awards to winning student groups chosen from this year's 17th annual Sustainable Design Challenge. Awards went to students from Wheaton Academy (West Chicago), Glenbard East High School (Lombard), and two teams from Hinsdale South High School (Darien),

"Over the past 17 years, we've had nearly 500 teams and thousands of students participate in the Challenge. I'm more impressed with the detail and sophistication of the projects each year," said DuPage County Stormwater Management Committee Chair Jim Zay. "This year was particularly outstanding, and I am pleased to award prizes to four talented and deserving groups."

Sponsored by DuPage County Stormwater Management, SCARCE coordinates the annual event, which encourages students to construct building and landscape models using environmental and water-friendly design practices. Local professionals working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields served as judges, evaluating the students' designs, presentations and innovation. Judges this year decided to add a second-place winner for one of the categories, for a total of four awards.

The winning groups were:

Best Overall LEED Design: Claire Petrosius and Grace Koziol, Hinsdale South High School
Second Place Overall LEED Design: Megan Lindberg and Katie Montana, Wheaton Academy
Best Stormwater Design: Owen Atkinson, Hinsdale South High School
Best Energy Design: Victor Hanson, Glenbard East High School

Student groups participated in the annual Sustainable Design Challenge on April 18 at DuPage County's JTK Administration Building. Competitors presented models of their landscape and building designs and explained the various elements that saved energy, preserved the environment and contributed to sustainability goals. Students featured energy sources such as solar panels and wind turbines, and water conservation elements such as native plant landscaping, rain barrels and other green infrastructure for stormwater management.

Hinsdale South World Language
Honors' Societies and Trilingual Scholars 2023
Congratulations to the Spring 2023 new inductees to our World Language Honors’ Societies! Membership in these highly selective honor societies is based on scholarship in general, scholarship in the language of study, active participation in world language-related activities, and a personal interest in all things French, German, Latin, and/or Spanish. Our induction celebration will take place on May 23 during school honoring both these students as well as our Trilingual Scholars: graduating seniors who took 4 years of one world language and 2 or more years of another world language. A special congratulations goes to existing Spanish Honors’ Society member Parth Joshi for winning the National Spanish Exam (NSE) Junior Travel Scholarship to go to Costa Rica this summer! Parth received his scholarship based, in large part, on his performance on the NSE. His accomplishments the past two years have included earning gold medals on the Spanish II and III exams and scoring in the top 10 of his competition level in the Chicago-area chapter of the AATSP on both tests. Congratulations to all honorees!
