Family Reunited with Mother in Memphis
John and Grace were pregnant with their first child when they moved from Memphis, TN to Arizona three years ago. John had received a job offer that paid very well and it would get them out of an undesirable neighborhood where they lived in Memphis,

In November 2021, John was laid off from his job, and was unable to find other employment. Grace had been juggling taking care of their child and trying to go back to work, and they couldn't keep up with childcare fees. Within a couple of months, the family was evicted from their apartment in Mesa. After experiencing homelessness for several months, John heard about the Diversion program at the HSC. Coming to the Brian Welcome Center felt like it was their last option; getting laid off really put them in a difficult situation where they had no choice but to find a way to go back to Memphis.

HSC staff sat down with the family and confirmed that John's mother in Memphis was more than willing to take the whole family in so that they could get back on their feet. John and Grace immediately began making connections to find jobs to save money with the ultimate goal to get a place of their own. John's mother Jacqueline agreed to take care of her granddaughter while mom and dad were working. HSC staff purchased bus tickets and the family traveled safely back to Memphis.

Keep it Cut, a subscription based hair salon with nine locations throughout the Valley, continues to support HSC's efforts to end homelessness in our community. Keep it Cut recently opened a new salon at Desert Ridge Marketplace. In addition to a fundraising campaign in February, Keep It Cut donated 100% of revenue from opening week of the new location, April 25 to May 1, to HSC.

“We are truly grateful for the financial support from Keep It Cut and for their generous donation of time and talents for the people experiencing homelessness that we serve,” said Amy Schwabenlender, Human Services Campus Executive Director. “Addressing the challenges of homelessness requires a collective effort and Keep It Cut is an important partner in that effort.”
