Hillview Spring Concert
Wednesday, May 22, 6:30 p.m., Hillview PAC
Come hear our wonderful ensembles this coming Wednesday at the Spring Concert! The music begins at 6:30 p.m. with Jazz Bands, followed by the Band at 7:00 p.m. The orchestras will take to the stage at 7:45 p.m!  We will be playing our Disneyland set that will be performed in Disneyland on Saturday, May 25, Memorial Day weekend!

Hillview Open House
Thursday, May 23, 6:30 - 8:15 p.m., Hillview Quad 
Gather at 6:30 for a welcome address from Mr. Haug. Classrooms and other spaces on campus will be open from the end of the address until 8:15 p.m. We look forward to hosting you and celebrating a year of learning! 
  • Hillview Music - 7/8 Band and 7/8 Orchestra will perform from 6:10 - 6:30 p.m. before the Open House begins. Come hear some wonderful music in the spirit of celebrating Hillview!

It is time to start the process of returning Hillview property and materials, beginning with textbooks. We will collect all textbooks that have gone home for student reference starting May 23. Remind your student to return textbooks (Math, Science, Social Studies, Foreign Language) to the Hillview office.

Parent and Community Tech Talk

The Hillview Technology Team is hosting a follow-up to our first Parent and Community Tech Talk on February 27. In this second parent-engagement session we discuss next steps and plans for the future in making the best use of technology while at Hillview. At our first parent engagement session, we discussed several aspects of our 1:1 iPad program. See the discussion slides here and the initial slide presentation here.

Fall Sports 2019
Boys Flag Football and Girls Volleyball will begin in the Fall. We need your information to contact you about registration information before school starts next year. You do not need to make a decision now, just provide your information   here  and you will receive fall sports registration information before school starts.

8th-Grade Grad Party - Donations
Just four weeks to go! A huge thanks to those parents who have already supported our Grad Night Party fundraising efforts. To date, we have received donations from 66% of the graduating class. All 8th-grade students are welcome regardless of donation, however we hope for a contribution of $50 per 8th-grade student. As a reminder, this is a 100% parent-organized and funded event. Help us make the party great for everyone. You may make your donation hereSeparately, if you are interested in sponsoring any portion of the party (such as the DJ, etc.), your support would be greatly appreciated. 8th-Grade Decades Dance

The Hillview PE and Dance Department is excited to present the 8th-Grade Decades Dance, . We welcome families to watch the performances. Last names A - L come for the 5:00 p.m. show; Last names M - Z come for the 6:00 p.m. show. Please follow these attendance rules so that all families can watch the show. See you all there!

Hillview Book Fair  
Monday, May 20 - Thursday, May 23,  open each day before school 8:00 - 8:30 a.m., during brunch, and lunch, and 30 minutes after school, library.
Explore new books and stock up for summer reading for the whole family. The Book Fair will offer the Hillview Summer Reading books plus the assigned book for incoming M-A freshman. We will have a hand-picked selection of books for younger elementary siblings. The Book Fair will be open during the Hillview Open House Thursday, May 23 from 6:00 - 9:00 p.m.

Hillview PTO Congratulates Houjun Liu and Emi Maeda!
Last week we incorrectly named Eri Maeda as the winner, but it was in fact, Emi Maeda, 6th-grade student, who won first place in the San Mateo County STEAM Fair and 3rd place in the Regional STEM Fair with her science project, "The Art of Skipping Stones." Our apologies, Emi.

8th-grade student, Houjun "Jack" Liu, won third place at the state-wide Science and Engineering Fair held in Los Angeles last week. Read the summary of Jack's project, "Observing Behavior of Actor-Critic Driven Disturbance Agents on Cryptocurrency Exchanges" here. Congratulations, Jack and Eri!

Transportation Message from the Superintendent
The 2019 SamTrans Summer Youth Pass goes on sale Tuesday, May 21, and we're reaching out to parents about this heavily discounted bus pass. The SYP is only $40 and is good for unlimited rides on any SamTrans route for kids 18 years and younger from June 1 through August 31. Details about the Summer Youth Pass are online  here.

CMEA Choral Festival
Congratulations and thanks to the numerous student and parent volunteers who helped last Friday and Saturday to make the CMEA Choral Festival a great success! Hillview hosted over 1000 students and 22 choirs from throughout the Bay Area.

Congratulations to the Hillview 7/8 Band and 7/8 Orchestra 
They performed at the CMEA Band/Orchestra Festival yesterday at the SD School of the Arts!
You performed magnificently!

Jeanie Ritchie Grant was awarded to Hillview Music
Brett Strader, composer, created two music pieces for Hillview Music. Band and Orchestra will premiere these commissioned pieces at the Spring Concert; Mr. Strader will be conducting. Come out and celebrate these original works! They are dedicated to Jeanie Ritchie for her endless support of education in Menlo Park.

Hillview to Perform in Disneyland
Saturday, May 25, at Hollywood Backlot Stage 
Hillview Orchestra and Band will be performing in the Disneyland California Adventure Park. If you are in the area, stop by and hear us! The band performs at 10:30 a.m. and the orchestra at 12:30 p.m. This is all part of the Disney Magic Music Days program.

T his newsletter is published by Hillview School parent volunteers every Sunday of the school year, except for Sundays preceding a full week of vacation.

Submissions to the Newsletter : The deadline to submit to the Hillview Newsletter is Wednesday at noon . Email your submission to  [email protected] . Note that submissions may be edited for content and/or length. Submissions received after the deadline will be eligible for inclusion the following week. Submissions are eligible to run for up to two weeks. 

Submissions with Photos or Names of Students: Provide the names of the students in the photo to the administrator of the school that the student attends. Request that the administrator send approval for the use of photos and student names to [email protected].

Submissions for Off-Campus Community event: E mail your announcement to  [email protected] . The submission deadline is  Wednesday at noon.
