Gloucester County’s Deputy County Administrator George Bains was recently awarded the Julian F. Hirst Award for Distinguished Service by the Hampton Roads Chapter of the American Society for Public Administration (ASPA). The award is given each year to a Hampton Roads-area public administrator that demonstrates an exceptional record of public service.

Gloucester County’s Museum of History will host its annual spring living history weekend this weekend, May 20-21, to commemorate the County’s role in the Revolutionary War. The program, “Gloucester 1776: A Revolutionary Experience,” will include cannon and musket firing demonstrations, dozens of reenactors, colonial era cooking, children’s activities, and more. The program will take place on Saturday from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. and on Sunday from 10 a.m.– 3 p.m.

The Middle Peninsula Community Services Board will host a narcotics investigator with the Gloucester Sheriff's Office June 22 from 3-4 p.m. who will provide a current overview of illicit drugs impacting our communities.

Parks, Recreation and Tourism Press Events for the Coming Week


**SUMMER REGISTRATION IS NOW OPEN FOR CAMPS AND FALL SOCCER.**


KARATE

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring is sponsoring Karate for ages 4 and older on Mondays of Thursdays at T. C. Walker from May 22-July 31 or May 25 – August 3. Four classes are offered for students of all levels, including a family class where adults and youth work together to learn. Fees are $35-$45 and the deadline to register is May 15 or May 18.


BINGO

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Bingo for ages 55 and over on Wednesday, May 24 from 10:30 am to Noon at the Stewart Building. Winnings are prizes; no cash. The fee is $10 and the deadline to register is May 21.


CHAIR FITNESS

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Chair Fitness on Thursdays in June from 9:30-10:30 am at the Stewart Building. Bring a mat, hand weights and water. The fee is $40 and the deadline to register is May 25.


CHAIR YOGA

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Chair Yoga on Thursdays in June 11:00-Noon at the Stewart Building. Bring a mat, blocks and water. The fee is $40 and the deadline to register is May 25.


KIDS FREE FISHING DAY AT BEAVERDAM

Parks, Recreation & Tourism and the Department of Wildlife Resources is sponsoring Kids Free Fishing Day, fo rages 5-15, at Beaverdam Park on Saturday, June 3 from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. The weekend of June 3 and 4 are Free Fishing days in Virginia, no fishing licenses are needed to fish on those days. A Conservation Police Officer will be on site to help and will bring fishing poles and bait for registered participants. An adult must accompany children. Registration is free but required in advance, the deadline to register is May 27.


BEAVERDAM KID’S FISHING TOURNAMENT

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring a Kid’s Fishing Tournament, for ages 5-15, on Sunday, June 4 from 7:30 am to 12:30 pm. An adult must accompany all participants. Shore fishing and boat fishing divisions, all rental fees apply. Age divisions will be determined by registration. The fee is $15 and the deadline to register is May 28


ZUMBA

Parks, Recreation & Tourism is sponsoring Zumba on Mondays and Wednesdays in June from 6:45-7:45 pm at Abingdon. The fee is $8 per day if you sign up for the whole month or $9 per day for individual days. The deadline to register is May 29.
