Mark Linden, CEC AAC MAY 2013 From the Range Greetings Fellow Culinarians and Associates I draw your attention to a very special event coming up in May. It is our annual Special Olympics Fundraiser event where we assemble 6000 box lunches for these remarkable athletes. The dates where we need help are on Thursday, May 30th, 2pm - 8pm and Friday, May 31st 2pm - 7pm. This will be at the Renton Technical College. The Western Regional ACF Conference has come and gone. Our chapter had several students and schools participating in competitions throughout the event. The Culinary Knowledge Bowl was a cliff hanger right to the end. It came down to two of our chapters in the state of Washington. In the end all are winners and were awarded medals. Lake Washington repeated last year's triumph of winning and now will head to the national event in July. Bellingham Technical College fielded two teams, one for the knowledge bowl and performed admirably as well as a hot and cold food competition team, earning a bronze medal. Their cold food platter was very colorful and exciting. Congratulations to each student and coach for a great effort and representing our chapter so well. It takes a lot of time and dedication to participate in these events. John Fisher accepted the Herman Reusch award. Janet Waters received the prestigious Presidential Medallion for her many years of service to our chapter. Our chapter won the Western Region Chapter of the Year Award. Thanks to so many of you who volunteer and make our chapter so great. Janet also participated in the Pastry Chef of the Year and made a wonderful dessert platter. With over 16 schools and businesses participating. A special thanks to John Fisher and Doug Medbury for making all the arrangements. The Best Apprentice Award went to Shalbe Walsh, The People's Choice went to the Seattle Golf Course and the Best School to Bellingham Technical College. Congratulations to these and all those who participated. The food served was great. The evening also brought a special visit from our national president of the ACF, Michael Ty. He acted as one of our judges for the Bite. During his presentation to us he presented a special presidential coin honoring outstanding service to our chapter to John Fisher, Gary Fuller, Michael Baldwin and Tony Parker. The "Cutting Edge" Award for continual support to our Chapter went to Doug Medbury and The Renton Technical College for their many years of support they have given to our chapter. The Seattle Chaine des Rotisseurs presented a check for $5,000 to the apprentice fund. Our heartfelt thanks to them for this bequest. ACF National Elections Beginning on May 6th many of you with a current email address on file with the national ACF office will receive an electronic ballot for voting in the 2013 elections. Those without a current email address will receive a paper ballot. It is an important time in our culinary federation that requires some time to reflect on whom you would like to see in the offices that are open for election. There are candidates running that have different ideas on what they think the future holds for us. Some will continue with current philosophies whereas others see the need for a larger shift to become more business oriented. We have an important election in our region for the Western Regional Vice President. Do you wish to see things continue under our current leadership or see the need to change. I have listed the links below to each candidate's internet site. Please take a look and vote responsibly. Candidates:
