Volunteers Help Build Community in Elgin
National Day of Service planned for Saturday, June 7
Transformation shows are a big hit on TV. How would you like to be part of an amazing transformation in Elgin, Illinois? No painful auditions or lotteries to be a part of this transformation. Just sign up, sign a waiver, and show up!
NHS of the Fox Valley's NeighborWorks Day transformation is two-fold:
1. Leading volunteers to turn a large, overgrown and litter-strewn lot along Willow Creek into a welcoming public space with trails and quiet places to enjoy nature.
2. Partnering with Habitat for Humanity of the Northern Fox Valley to demolish the interior of a formerly vacant home it will be transforming in South East Elgin.
Volunteers at the natural area site will be planting, removing unwanted brush, cleaning up litter, and laying a mulch trail system throughout the area. The work will be physical, but the rewards will last for years to come. The community will have a remarkable public space, and you will have had an opportunity to be a part of making it happen!
Volunteers at the Habitat house will be swinging hammers, tearing down walls and hauling debris - getting the place ready for volunteer crews to start rebuilding a beautiful home for a family.
The event begins with registration and an overview at 8 a.m., and lunch will be served to volunteers from 12 noon and 2 p.m. There are volunteer opportunities at the event for people who may not be able to manage the more rigorous brush removal and hauling.
NHS of the Fox Valley is a part of Neighborhood Housing Services of Chicago and a NeighborWorks affiliate serving Kane County with programs that help families buy, fix and keep their homes. In addition to its pre-purchase counseling, homebuyer education, neighborhood lending and foreclosure prevention counseling programs, NHS of the Fox Valley is committed to its work of building stronger neighborhoods throughout Kane County.
For more information about NHS of the Fox Valley, or to find out how to volunteer on June 7, please contact Mary Lu Seidel, Director, at 847.695.0399 x. 4602 or via email mseidel@nhschicago.org.

Raise Your Hand Chicagoland
Beginning May 29, Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley, alongside other Habitat for Humanity affiliates in Chicagoland, will take part in an unprecedented building blitz in the heart of downtown Chicago. The event, "Raise Your Hand Chicagoland," will bring Habitat for Humanity in Chicagoland's vision to life: helping transform generations of families and revitalizing neighborhoods through homeownership. From May 29 through June 1 at Pioneer Court Plaza, "Raise Your Hand Chicagoland" volunteers from Northern Fox Valley and across the area will come together with Habitat for Humanity leaders, elected officials, supporters and partner families to complete the initial construction of 13 homes. Immediately following, these new homes will be taken into communities across the region, where they will be finished and become a place 13 deserving area families can call their own. "'Raise Your Hand Chicagoland' invites everyone in Chicagoland to raise their hand to show their support for Habitat for Humanity, and we hope residents from Northern Fox Valley will join us at Pioneer Plaza for this historic undertaking," said Barb Beckman, Executive Director. "Through the event, we hope to build further awareness for Habitat for Humanity's mission and raise funds so we can help even more deserving families in Northern Fox Valley." Those across Northern Fox Valley are invited to attend "Raise Your Hand Chicagoland" to tour a Habitat home, participate in family-friendly activities and learn more about Habitat for Humanity in Chicagoland, including future volunteer opportunities. For more information, visit the "Raise Your Hand Chicagoland" website. About Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity was created as a support organization for the eight Habitat for Humanity affiliates in the Chicagoland area, with a goal of significantly increasing the number of families served in the Chicagoland region. Chicagoland Habitat for Humanity can leverage capacity building and growth, marketing and advocacy as "one Chicago Habitat for Humanity" by working in collaboration with the eight Chicagoland affiliates.

National Women Build Week
Women in Northern Fox Valley are invited to volunteer on May 3, 7, 9, and 10 during Habitat for Humanity's seventh annual National Women Build Week. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley is one of more than 300 Habitat affiliates nationwide hosting Women Build projects with the support of Lowe's, Habitat's longtime partner in the event. National Women Build Week, held May 3-11, challenges women to devote at least one day to building simple, decent and affordable housing in their local communities. More than 52,000 women volunteers from all 50 states have participated in previous years. To date, women volunteers have helped construct more than 2,200 Habitat houses nationwide. This is the first time Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley will be participating in National Women Build Week. Lowe's helped launch National Women Build Week in 2008, and each year provides the support of Lowe's Heroes employee volunteers and conducts how-to clinics at stores to teach volunteers construction skills. This year, Lowe's contributed $1.75 million to National Women Build Week as part of a new five-year partnership with Habitat that will bring Lowe's total contributions to more than $63 million since 2003. In celebration of this renewed partnership, Lowe's and Habitat launched Hammers for Habitat, a volunteer initiative inviting men and women across America to give one day to help make the dream of homeownership a reality for a family in their community. To learn more, visit Habitat.org/Lowes. Lowe's how-to clinics are open to women interested in volunteering at a local Women Build site during National Women Build Week and will take place at Lowe's of Arlington Heights at 990 West Algonquin Road. The date and time for the "How to Safely Use Hand and Power Tools" clinic is yet to be determined, but will most likely take place sometime at the beginning of June. Visit Habitat.org/wb for more information on National Women Build Week. About Lowe's in the Community Lowe's, a FORTUNE 100 home improvement company, has a 50-year legacy of supporting the communities it serves through programs that focus on K-12 public education and community improvement projects. Since 2007, Lowe's and the Lowe's Charitable and Educational Foundation together have contributed nearly $200 million to these efforts, and for more than two decades Lowe's Heroes employee volunteers have donated their time to make our communities better places to live. To learn more, visit Lowes.com/SocialResponsibility and LowesInTheCommunity.tumblr.com. Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley will be hosting three builds on the future home of family partner and veteran Roberto Cintora during the week of Memorial Day. These builds will take place at 315 Jewett Street in Elgin on Wednesday, Friday, and Saturday, May 28, 30, and 31, 2014. He was honorably discharged in 1999 as a Lance Corporal with the National Defense and Armed Forces Expeditionary medals. After years away from home, he returned with his two children, twin boys, to put down roots in the community where he grew up.He was approved for a Habitat for Humanity house and matched with a property in his hometown of Elgin. He is actively completing his sweat equity and looking forward to moving this summer.

31st Annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project
Hello Habitat for Humanity volunteers!
We're happy to announce general volunteer registration is now open online for the 31st annual Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project, to be held October 5 - 11 in both Dallas and Fort Worth, Texas. You can complete the application and learn all the details at http://cwpdallasfortworth.org.
For more than 30 years, former President Carter and his wife, Rosalynn, have given a week of their time to help Habitat for Humanity improve and build homes throughout the world. The Carter Work Project helps raise awareness for the critical need for simple, decent and affordable housing. The event includes opening ceremonies in Dallas on Sunday afternoon, build days Monday through Friday and closing ceremonies in Fort Worth on Saturday. There will also be a Thursday evening celebration dinner (tickets sold separately).
General construction volunteers will be asked to make a $2,250 financial commitment to participate in the week long build. A portion of the financial commitment will help fund the construction costs of the homes we will build and repair together. Volunteers will have access to our online tool to assist in their fundraising efforts.
In addition to the financial commitment, participants must be at least 18 years old and physically able to participate in construction activities.
Registration is open to anyone who would like to apply, so please send this e mail far and wide to your family, friends or coworkers who may be interested. We know with your support, the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project will be a great success and will shine a bright light on the great work you help Habitat do in communities around the world!
If you are not able to join us for the Carter Work Project this year, you might consider traveling internationally with one of our special Global Village teams. In the Philippines we will build back stronger after the typhoon, in Colombia a high impact team will transform an informal settlement and in Nepal we will convene hundreds of volunteers for an event so big we had to call it the Everest Build. Please visit our website for more details.
Sincerely,
The Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project team
Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley participated in the Jimmy & Rosalynn Carter Work Project in 2012 in Logne, Haiti. The entire group of Northern Fox Valley volunteers, board members, and staff can be seen pictured above with Jimmy Carter, as well as country music stars Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood.
