Mood and the Living Experience
In the 19th Century there was a good deal of talk about the importance of "mood" in works of art. It's not such a hot topic these days.
When I looked at these three new paintings together in my studio it was easy for me to remember just what I felt in each instance -- and just how distinctly different each living experience was.
The spirit of a place always has it's own story to tell. If I am clear and present the mood comes through, always filtered through my own temperament.
Hope, Joy, Melancholy, Decay, Rebirth are all moods of equal value.
Each has its strain of richness and beauty.
Mozart said "Great music should contain all manner of emotion but never be hard on the ear."
Sounds right to me.

After a very successful experience teaching this workshop in New York, I'm excited to be teaching this in my loft studio in St. Paul!
All individuality and personality in a work of art comes from Subjective Choice Making -- not merely copying what is before us.
You will have seven days to work out those choices while creating a large painting in the studio -- unhurried and thoughtful.
We will be utilizing reference material (Field sketches, Drawings and/or Photos) and will deal with Composition, Distillation & Integration of Forms and Clarifying your personal vision.
You can expect frequent lectures, demos when necessary and a great deal of personal attention.
This is your chance to dig deep and expand your possibilities.
