Upper Chattahoochee Chapter #436 - Trout Unlimited
|
|
On April 23 UCCTU sponsored the Sam Rizzio Youth Fly Fishing and Conservation Clinic at the Chattahoochee Nature Center. It was a major success, with a capacity of 36 participants between the ages of 10 and 15 learning the fundamentals of fly fishing and cold water conservation. Generous donations from sponsors such as Alpharetta Outfitters, The Fish Hawk, Bass Pro Shop, and Atlanta Fly Fishing School enabled us to give every participant fishing equipment to help them get started, including nine rod/reel outfits donated by L L Bean. We want to thank all of the sponsors that helped make this possible.
Special thanks to UCCTU and GWFF volunteers that donated generously of their time to plan and instruct at the clinic: Tom Hayes, Bob Foster, Bill Malloy, Cullen McClure, Pete Dvornek, Jeff Hammen, Ken Mock, Eunice Lovell, Deb Bowen, Circe Tsui, and Ryan Hartley.
And speaking of Ryan Hartley, I am very pleased to announce that he has been accepted to TU's Teen Summit that will take place at Georgetown Lake, Montanna next month! The Summit is an opportunity for teens from across the country to meet to discuss how to better engage teen members, to learn how to become leaders, and to work on service projects. There is an outside chance they may be able to work in some fly fishing as well... Congratulations to Ryan! We look forward to hearing about his experience there.

Sincerely,
Jim

Our May Speaker:
John Lee Thompson, Trout Stocking Coordinator for the State of Georgia
|
John Lee Thomson is the Trout Stocking Coordinator for the State of Georgia and he will be presenting an overview of the Georgia's Trout Stocking Program at our meeting in May. John Lee grew up in Northern Virginia and graduated from Robinson Secondary School in Fairfax County. While earning a B.S. degree in Aquacultue, Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Clemson University, he worked at the University's experimental catfish facility. After graduation in 1999 he moved to West Palm Beach, Florida to pursue a career as a fisheries biologist with a private environmental consulting company. Over 8 years, he learned about private business sector and aquatic ecology.
In 2006, he and his wife decided to move back to Georgia to start their family. He applied for a technician position at Lake Burton Fish Hatchery and has been working there since. He performed the duties of the Assistant Hatchery Manager for over two years, when he was asked to act as the interim manager. In August 2012 he was officially promoted this position. As the manager at Lake Burton Fish Hatchery, he also serves as the Statewide Trout Stocking Coordinator. This position requires him to work with all the government trout hatcheries to achieve the goal of over 1 million catchable trout stocked in Georgia each year.
Come join us on Tuesday evening, May 24 from 6 to 9 pm. The meeting will be held at Ippolitos Restaurant near the intersection of Holcomb Bridge Road and Eves Road in Roswell.
