Listening to Your Body....Following Your Heart,
Healing the Traumatized Heart workshop,  or a Community As Healer workshop,

I realize that some of you know me from my 32 years as a body psychotherapist, and others of you know me as a singer/songwriter/musician.  And some of you know me through both of my life passions.

And over the past several years, as these newsletters have included BOTH music and mind-body events, articles and news, some people have felt confused.

Truly, both sides of my life and work come from the same place:   the heart. And whether the form of my heart's expression is healing/psychotherapy/coaching
or music (or writing or photography or....), at the source, they are truly interconnected.

More on that in this month's featured article:   "The Many Expressions of the Heart."

Anita Coelho

On Saturday, May 13, I am delighted to welcome Brazilian vocalist Anita Coelho to the Music Salon, joined by Ebinho Cardoso and Nando Michelin.

" "Each artist needs an inspiration;
Neither degree nor type matter.
An outside, moving motivation
That gives you strength to make things better.

A poet's pen will flow with ease
When thoughts of love
run through his mind;
However, when such feelings cease,
The ink will fade; the well will dry."

--From my journals when I was 17 years old

"A thin line stands
between dream and reality.
And only the heart knows
the characteristics
that correspond to
either side.  "

--From my journals when I was 16 years old

The Many Expressions of the Heart

In 1983, I founded a group called the Boston Arts Roundtable.  I was a singer/songwriter seeking community.  And I realized that to have an artist's soul, meant that there was a core sensibility that was deeper than any one genre of expression.  While people can get pigeon-holed as singers or pianists or watercolor artists or photographers or writers, I found that many artists were actually multi-genred.  And that expressive arts and the healing arts are interconnected as well.

Playing piano at
Amazing Things Arts Center

Music is such a source of great joy, and is a universal language to connect people heart-to-heart. In addition to my own musical gigs,   I also participate in many of the wonderful open mics and other musical events available to local singers:

Amazing Things Arts Center organized by Leslie Holmes
Many BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists) singers perform in a monthly open mic.  This month, it is May 10 at 7 pm.

BACA (Boston Association of Cabaret Artists) Open Mics in Watertown (next one is Wednesday, May 24 at 7 pm at UU Church in Watertown)
Club Café in Boston has many open mics hosted by a wonderful variety of singers and pianists in its Napoleon Room.
The Winiker Band  brings their unique joyous musical flavor to Brothers Restaurant in Brookline, MA on Saturday and Sunday nights.  Singers are welcome.

And here in Waltham at my home, I host special house concerts through the Music Salon.  Brazilian singer Anita Coelho will join us on May 13.

What is EKP?
EKP is Emotional-Kinesthetic Psychotherapy, a heart-centered, body-centered psychotherapy method Linda Marks developed and has taught and practiced for nearly twenty years. Working with the heart, touch with permission, the wisdom of the body and the intuitive guidance of the spirit, EKP creates a special sense of intimacy that deeply touches and transforms most all who participate.

Participants can be "client," witness or helper as an individual group member has a "turn" to do deeper heart-centered, body-centered psychospiritual work in the center. Since the electromagnetic field of the heart extends out 10 - 12 feet from our bodies, as we go deeper and open our hearts, we are all touched.

EKP helps restore our capacity as organs of perception. The skin is our largest organ, and a source of soul deep knowing, perception and expression. When our hearts and hands can work as one, we move beyond defenses safely and respectfully and find freedom, connection and expression.

Emotional safety is the foundation of EKP.  When we are emotionally safe, we are more aware of feelings, sensations and deeper thoughts in our bodies and hearts.  You will have a chance to listen to and care for your heart as you help create and hold a safe healing space for everyone's heart.  Experience what we mean when we say that in EKP, "when anyone has a turn, everyone has a turn."
