Foldable Flowers
with Oralee Nudson
Our first meeting in the Guild's new studio will feature pop-up flowers, just in time for spring in Fairbanks! First we'll shape, fold, and decorate these joyful blooms and then nestle them into a folio that can function as pages in a book or the perfect card to celebrate Mothers Day, graduations and other end-of-year occasions.
Please bring the following:
glue stick or quick drying liquid glue
bone folder
scissors
pencil
dual felt tip markers and/or colored pencils
embellishments for the card - e.g., rickrack, washi tape, hole punches
Everyone welcome!

Come and learn this easy and functional structure! This book has a concertina binding with 5-hole pamphlet stitch, and a cover that wraps around, all without glue! The book is great for journals, photo albums, and sketching. You'll find yourself using this clever binding again and again in future projects.
In this Studio Session we will first create a model that can be taken apart and studied as you use it for future projects. We will also create a finished book, personalized with a decorated cover. This one you can use right away!
A list of tools to bring to class will be sent to registered participants.

WORKSHOP
Fall Flora & The Artist's Book
with Guest Artist Andie Thrams
Friday evening, August 24, 6-8pm
Saturday and Sunday, August 25-26, 10am - 4pm
NBG Studio
Caribou Building, Suite 205
3550 Airport Way
Cost $200, includes $45 materials fee
Explore the elusive creative space between the careful and the wild as you create an accordion-folding book. Native flora will be used as inspiration for drawing, painting, and writing in both traditional and non-traditional ways. Directed experiments using watercolor, ink, and gouache will develop imagery and content, full of autumn magic.
Andie Thrams is a Sierra Nevada-based visual artist. A lifelong devotion to creative work in wilderness habitats, especially within the pages of her field journals, has evolved into artist's books and paintings held in private and public collections throughout the United States. Her work is widely exhibited and has been honored by institutions including the Sitka Center for Art & Ecology and Yosemite Renaissance. Andie earned a BA in art practice from the University of California at Berkeley, and she regularly teaches outdoor art workshops.
Registration is open!
Reserve your place with cash or check made out to NBG.
IMPRINTS UPDATE
The publication of IMPRINTS has entered a new phase. All the writings are set and printed, and all the images have been hand printed on the letterpress folios. While we still have to print several auxiliary pages, we are starting the binding process. Come to the meeting to learn about how we, as a community of book binders, are going to assemble the pages, construct the covers, and bind them together using a drum leaf structure. We invite you to participate!
On Display at UAF Rasmuson Library:
WOVEN SPINE BINDINGS
These little books are more art objects than functional books, although they can be both. The spotlight
of the binding is on the spine where the texture of colored threads woven back and forth provides a background for clusters of beads and other objects. Each book has a distinct personality determined by choices of papers, palette, and embellishments.
All books on loan from participants of Woven Spine Workshop,
UAF WINTERmester 2018, instructed by Margo Klass
