MOVING PARTS
Come this June I have served First Lutheran Church for eight years. It has been a good eight years from my perspective. When I came to this congregation there was a lot of anxiety about the future of the congregation, about whether a pastor would even want to serve in this place, about finances, and many other issues. I am happy to say that these worries are in the distant past. Currently our anxiety here is about more mundane things: getting a newsletter out, how are we going to repair the skylight in the atrium, will we get an usher to serve for a particular sunday, you know ordinary, small things. We have come a long way to be in this state of normalcy.

But now we are experiencing change in our midst. This change is causing a new kind of anxiety, an exciting kind of anxiety. The Holy Spirit is blowing through this congregation and is calling us to new ministry opportunities. Below I will outline three movements that will affect FLC and how we will move into God's preferred and promised future for us.

Altar Flowers Request
Now that Lent is over we are again accepting donations for altar flowers. The altar flower forms are on the bulletin board above the toddler’s play area. Please remember your special occasions with a gift of altar flowers. Special occasions will be acknowledged in the bulletin. The flowers are now being purchased from Bothell Florist, and the suggested donation is $35. Thank you for your generosity.

From Roger: What's Coming Up!
Helping Hands Day with Cub Scout Pack #584 is on Saturday, May 5, from 10 AM to 12 PM. First Lutheran’s Cub Scouts are going to be helping with some Spring Cleaning! Projects they will be working on include washing the church bus and trailer, cleaning the church parking lot, helping with general clean-up, picking up trash around the church and our neighboring properties. Special thanks to the First Lutheran Garden Guild who have agreed to help lead and supervise several of these projects! “Many Hands make the Labor Light!”

Guys Night Out!   Saturday, May 5,  4 - 7 pm
The men of First Lutheran are invited to meet at the Foggy Noggin Brewery at 4 pm on Saturday, May 5th to sample an assortment of craft brews. Since this is in a residential neighborhood, please pull forward into the long driveway to avoid clogging the street. There is plenty of parking on the property near the garage. The brewery is located at 22329 – 53rd AVE SE in Bothell.  After our tasting, around 5 PM, we will move to Rob and Kim McCaw’s home for a BBQ Pot-Luck. The McCaw home is nearby at 23415 – 49th AVE SE. For the BBQ Pot-Luck, please bring some brats or burgers to throw on the BBQ, or a salad to share and / or some beverage to share. To help with planning, please RSVP to Rob or Roger.  We hope that you can join us!

Men’s Breakfast and Bible Study, Saturday, May 19: 9 – 10:30 AM
Come and join other men from the congregation and community for breakfast and conversation! There will be “food for the body, food for the soul and food for thought!” Once again, Gordy Phelps is preparing a delicious breakfast spread. Pastor Berg is leading another inspiring Bible study and discussion. Future Breakfasts are scheduled for Saturday, May 19th and Saturday, June 16th. Please join us!

It’s A Church Work Party (Spring Cleaning) at First Lutheran on Saturday, May 19, starting from 9 AM to Noon. Please join the Properties Committee for a “Spring Cleaning!”  Our Work Party will include dusting, vacuuming and washing. Please bring your favorite cleaning utensils and help us spruce up our Church for the coming Pentecost Celebration! Please contact Audrey Fisher with any questions regarding the Spring Work Party.

New Books In Our FLC Library!
Library Committee recently ordered new books for our Library.  Here are two reviews.

COOKIES
By Amy Rosenthal Krouse (New York Times Best Selling Author)
A children’s book that all ages will enjoy. Amy writes about what it means to cooperate through the eyes of baking, sharing chocolate chip cookies. What “patience” means; what “nicely” means; what “polite” means; what “proud” means; what “trust” means, what “fair” means.

Riley Unlikely: With Simple Childlike Faith, Amazing Things Can Happen.
By Riley Banks- Snyder
Riley Unlikely is the inspiring story of Riley Banks, who first traveled to Kenya at age 13. She has been back every year since bringing backpacks of school supplies and hygiene kits for young girls, developing relationships and friendships. Riley is currently, as a young millennial, raising money to build a complete learning complex in Kibwezi, Kenya for those who have nothing.

Annual Towel Drive Benefits
Compass Housing Alliance
Thanks to all of you for your towel and toiletry donations. This year we collected 105 bath towels, 57 hand towels, 37 wash cloths and a lot of soaps and shampoos, etc. Compass Housing Alliance will love them all.
Scrip and Other Passive Fundraising for First Lutheran Church!
We have several opportunities for earning money while you shop for FLC's many social ministry programs:
  1. Buy Scrip on Sunday mornings or sign up for Shop with Scrip. Many vendors are available for instant purchase and redemption from your mobile phone in the Shop with Scrip program. No more writing checks; the money is automatically deducted from your checking account using Presto Pay. (The profit margin for scrip is not great enough to support credit card payments.) Scrip returns anywhere from 3 - 12% of your purchases to FLC! You can buy grocery cards, movie tickets, Amazon, even Groupon - the list is great!
  2. Sign up for Amazon Smile and name First Lutheran Church as your charity. Every time you shop with Amazon Smile FLC receive .05% of your purchase price. You can still use Amazon Prime. Get your kids to sign up, too!
  3. Link your Fred Meyer rewards card to their Community Rewards program for First Lutheran Church. All of your purchases will result in a quarterly donation to FLC.
  4. Sign up for Bartell's B Caring Program, and name First Lutheran Church as your charity.

WELCA has a special offer to order multiple copies of the May issue.
