Love Your Library! Sponsor a Stone for our Stone Wall
Sturgis Library is embarking on a project to build a stone retaining wall on the east side of our building where an existing historic stone wall ends. The embankment is eroding and poses a threat to the Library. With your assistance we can get this project completed! Our fundraising goal is $28,000.

Please help by sponsoring a stone in the wall. Stone sponsorships are available at levels to fit all budgets. Give now, so that we can get the project finished by fall!

If you have questions about the project, contact Director Lucy Loomis at 508-362-8448.

Get ready for the annual Plant and Garden Sale!
The Sturgis Library annual Plant and Garden Sale will be held on Saturday, June 1, 2019 from 9 AM to 1 PM.

Spring is here, and in the coming month you'll be working in your garden, dividing plants and cleaning up overgrown beds. Why not pot up a few of those plants to donate to the sale? We are interested in plants of all kinds: perennials, annuals, shrubs, vegetables, herbs, seedlings, and more. In addition, we are looking for donations of gently used or new items for the garden -- tools, pots, bird feeders and birdhouses, vases, books, and decorative items.

Donations will be accepted starting May 18th. If you have questions about the sale, contact us at 508-362-6636.

She'll also cover "what to do" if you find a baby bird, or if a bird strikes your window, and will provide tips on how we can better co-exist with our feathered neighbors. Upcoming Exhibits and Displays
Sturgis Library's collection of Edward Gorey posters, ephemera, and set designs will be on display during the month of May. Gorey created posters to promote local musical events, theater productions, art exhibits, book releases, and more. Many of the posters are signed limited editions.

In addition to the posters and ephemera, the exhibit will include several models of set designs by the late Helen Pond and Herbert Senn.

The grains, colors, knots, and burls of wood have intrigued Janet Edmonds as a way to more deeply love the trees of Cape Cod and as a way to accept mysteries in life. The lines and patterns in each piece of wood create texts that tell tales of their own. Janet works with hand tools powered by herself or the help of electricity. She's a bit scared of power saws! Recently she started carving bowls.

Janet collaborated with Norah Bourbon, a blacksmith, in creating three "Owl Chairs" for children. You can see one of them peeking at you in the image.

Janet's carved furniture will be on display in our lobby for the month of May.
Do you have artwork, photography, sculpture, crafts, a collection, or other interesting items to exhibit? Contact Corey Farrenkopf at 508-362-6636 or email him at sturgislibrary@comcast.net

A portion of the proceeds from the sale of exhibited art, photography, and crafts benefits the Sturgis Library. Proceeds are used to enhance library services and programs.

New and Improved Digital Newspaper Archive
Sturgis Library, working together with the Dennis and Yarmouth libraries, has just competed the expansion of our digital newspaper archive.

The digital newspaper archive now includes both the Barnstable Patriot AND the Register newspapers and expanded coverage! The archive includes issues of the Patriot from 1830 to 2017 , and issues of the Register from 1836 to 2017.

The two papers included news of the entire Cape Cod and the Islands in the early years, with 20th century emphasis on the towns of Barnstable, Dennis, and Yarmouth. Users can access nearly 200 years of national and local news and events.

This archive allows researchers to search and view issues of the newspaper online using keyword searching. Articles can be saved, printed, emailed, or shared on social media.

Our thanks go out to the Community Preservation Committees of the towns of Barnstable, Dennis, and Yarmouth for funding this very worthwhile project.
Vonnegut Reading Marathon and Celebration coming in August!
Sturgis Library is planning a very special series of programs celebrating the 50th anniversary of the writing of Slaughterhouse-Five by Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
The celebration will be held on August 2nd, 3rd, and 4th in conjunction with other Barnstable Village organizations . Please mark your calendars now!

The centerpiece of the celebration will be an 8-hour marathon reading of Slaughterhouse-Five as well as several of Vonnegut's shorter pieces, to be held on Saturday, August 3rd from 9 am to 5 pm. Readers will sign up to read for 10 or 15 minutes each throughout the day. Following the marathon there will be a cocktail party, and a chance to mix and mingle with your fellow readers. We are inviting some special readers to participate, including members of the Vonnegut family, friends of colleagues of Kurt Vonnegut, Vonnegut scholars, and others. But the main purpose of the event is to invite the community to be a part of this exciting marathon and celebration. If you are interested in being a reader, please contact Library Director Lucy Loomis at sturgislibrary@comcast.net or 508-362-8448.

Other activities throughout the weekend will include (schedule not yet finalized):
  • A lecture and multimedia presentation by Edie Vonnegut at Tales of Cape Cod
  • An "Art of the Doodle" workshop at the Cape Cod Art Center
  • A panel discussion with members of the Vonnegut family, Vonnegut friends and colleagues, Vonnegut scholars, and others. Audience members should bring their stories and questions!
  • Exhibits of Vonnegut documents, artwork, and memorabilia
  • A Chowderfest to close out the weekend
  • And more!

Barnstable Village organizations will be open that weekend and some will be hosting special exhibits and offering activities that you won't want to miss.
