Preparing for Re-accreditation
ORI has begun the rigorous re-accreditation process by the Association for Accreditation of Human Research Protection Programs (AAHRPP).
The re-accreditation process involves assessment, peer-review, modifications, education, monitoring, site visit interviews, reporting, and other activities culminating with the final Council determination in 2020. Researchers, IRB members, and others will be selected for interviews at the site-visit. In preparation, ORI will provide education updates and training opportunities throughout 2019.

Research Involving Economically or Educationally Disadvantaged Persons

The inclusion of participants representing a variety of social and economic backgrounds is crucial in ensuring that research findings benefit and are reflective of all individuals who may be affected by the condition or situation being studied.

Researchers and IRB Members consider whether subject selection is equitable and if safeguards are needed to protect the rights and welfare of populations that may be vulnerable to undue influence. 

ORI and the IRB has developed guidance which includes potential concerns, safeguards, and suggestions when conducting research with disadvantaged populations. The guidance is not prescriptive or comprehensive, as study context and the needs of each population is unique. To contribute practical suggestions to the evolving guide,

  Join us Thursday, September 5, for our annual human subject protection conference, entitled "Human Subject Protection: I Will Survive." This year's event will address issues of significant importance to human subject protections, including:
