MAY  2019 E-NEWSLETTER
A Message From Our President

Welcome to May! We had a very busy and successful Autism Awareness and Acceptance Month this April, and I wanted to take this opportunity to thank each and every person who supported or contributed to our organization or attended our events this month. We are so lucky to have such a wonderful and giving community here in San Diego, and we could not do what we do without you!

As we approach summer, we still have a few spots left in our summer camp programs. If your child is a teen, be sure to grab one of the remaining spots at Camp I CAN for teen week. I know this program is a favorite with my own children, just like our amazing Surf Camp, which also has a few spots remaining. All the information you need about these two programs is below. Registration for our adult summer program, AWARE, begins on May 1, so be sure to request the registration forms if you are looking for summertime activities for those who are 18+!

This month, be sure to join us at Get Air Vista for a morning of trampoline fun on Saturday, May 4th from 8-10 AM, for an autism friendly jump party! We are so excited to be able to offer another fun family friendly activity in North County! Also be sure to reserve tickets for the many exciting events from our friends at Mainly Mozart, starting this month on May 30th! Events include concerts, lectures, and more, and you can find more information below.

Wishing you a wonderful month,

Amy  Munera

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT: MAY 2019

The Autism Society San Diego is highlighting some of our amazing volunteers and honoring the work they do.

THIS MONTH...MEET VERONICA RANGEL!

One of our valuable "behind the scenes" volunteers, we are so excited to introduce you to Veronica, pictured here (left) beside our administrator Kay Freeman (right).

What's your connection to the autism community?
I developed a passion for working with developmental disabilities children in my community as Latino children are typically diagnosed later than white non-Latino children. I'm currently studying within Public Health and Board-Certified Behavior Analyst is my next step. I feel that providing adequate access to ASD care for this population is no longer an issue of concern only to specialists or to practitioners working in heavily Latino communities. I'm also Bilingual, speaking both English and Spanish.

How do you support the Autism Society San Diego?
I have been studying Epidemiology with a Public Health Specialization since 2016 and I'm currently volunteering for Autism Society San Diego in a variety of areas.

What is your favorite program the Autism Society San Diego is a part of?
I absolutely love Gym Nights and how this program provides the gymnasium equipment and bounce house. This is the best way to relax and connect with families raising a child with Autism.

The simplest way to get involved in supporting our community is...
The best way to keep up to date with services, funding, and programs in your community is by joining your local autism organization. Additionally, support groups give you the chance to socialize and share information form other autism parents or professionals who live in your community.
