U.S. Citizens Can Apply for Many Different Family Members
U.S. citizens have the broadest range of options when it comes to getting a loved one a family based green card.

The following are all the people in your life who you can petition for a green card on behalf of:

1) Your spouse and unmarried children under the age of 21:
Your spouse is typically eligible for an immediate family member visa

2) An orphaned child that you are adopting:
Can receive a visa and an expedited green card

3) Your parents:
If you are over the age of 21, your parents might be eligible for an immediate visa

4) Your fiance and their minor children: You can apply for a K-1 or K-2 non-immigrant visa for your fiance and their children

5) Other relatives: Citizens can also apply for green cards for relatives like your married children and siblings, but the wait is longer

Employee Spotlight: Juan F. Davalos, II
Juan joined the SLF team earlier this year. We asked Juan some questions so that our SLF family could learn more about him!

Juan, what do you do at the firm?
" I'm the Associate Attorney here in Atlanta. I represent our clients when they're in the courtroom. I represent our clients when they're at their adjustment or their citizenship interviews, and I work with the legal team to make sure everything from bond motion to a citizenship application is done on time so that our clients can really build a better future."

Why did you choose to practice immigration law?
"I knew I wanted to practice immigration law from when I was volunteering in an after school tutoring group in college. I ended up working with a group that was largely Hispanic. The children there took a liking to me and I ended up becoming a summer teacher their through AmeriCorps. Working with them at times was really just seeing the problems they faced, which often was the uncertainty about their parents immigration status and whether they they would be there, from one day to the next. Seeing the kids so nervous, and just not having this stability just kind of broke my heart. That's when I said I wanted to be an immigration attorney, trying to help these kids by helping the parents and helping them achieve that family unity."

What is a fun fact about you?
"I would say the fact that I'm actually a published author, technically. I wrote a paper in law school on international Outer Space treaties that got published in the Emory International Law Review. So yeah, that's a fun fact. I guess aside from my immigration experience, I'm happy to help anyone who has any pressing questions about the law on the moon"

Cinco de Mayo Education
As it is the month of May, you might have celebrated earlier in this month, Cinco de Mayo!

What many don't know is why it is celebrated so much in the United States and not as much in Mexico itself. Some think that it is Mexico's independence day, which is not correct.

It celebrates the defeat of the French army during the Battle of Puebla (Batalla de Puebla) in Mexico on May 5, 1862. It is not to be confused with Mexico's Independence Day.

The holiday over the last 50 plus years has grown to have a strong commercial focus in the United States. Centered on the sales of Mexican food, drinks, and music. In contrast, in Mexico it is celebrated not in this manner, but by a small celebration primarily in the city of Puebla, where a military parade and mock battle is thrown on. The more you know!

Earlier last month our SLF staff had some quality team bonding at our annual firm retreat!

Our firm theme for the year is EFFICIENCY and our retreat focused on how we can improve our systems and procedures to better serve our clients.

Zaira, what does mothers day mean to you?

"Mother's Day, to me is a day where we honor our mothers for all of the support, sacrifices, and lessons that they taught us.
That mom can be anyone who was a mother figure in your life , it could be your biological mom, your grandmother, an aunt that played a significant role in your life."

"I am eternally grateful to my mother, Aleida, she is such an inspiration and she gave up her career as a dentist in Dominican Republic to give us a much better life in the United States."

"The reason she decided to raise us here is because she recognized that as a family, there were limitations that possibly wouldn't allow my brother and I to reach our full potential if we remained in that country. But if we were in the United States, then sky's the limit."


" Mom. Happy Mother's Day. I love you. Thank you for all that you've done for me."
As memorial day is coming up, what does it mean to you to be the spouse of a service member during this holiday?

"As a military spouse, I am thankful that my husband is alive and is able to continue serving the United States. He's been deployed several times and we are blessed and fortunate that he is still here today."

"We also get to remember on Memorial Day, that the life that we build in the United States comes at a very heavy cost. So many people have lost their loved ones while serving and it's important to recognize and remember that the reason that we are a free country and the reason that we live in safe environments and safe communities is
because of the sacrifices made by our soldiers. "

" To all of those who are mourning a fallen soldier I mourn with you, and I thank all of them for their service and hope that you find peace and comfort knowing that their death is not in vain, and our country and many people in our country appreciate and admire them for what they did for us."


What inspired you to serve the immigrant community and to work in immigration law?

"When I began working for several attorneys at the young age of 17, I happened to be working with attorneys who were mostly serving the Latino community."

"The main reason that I chose immigration law is because I believe that people in the United States have opportunities to grow in ways that they could never do it in any other country. I believe that in America, you can get an education that you would not have been able to get in your home country, you can get a job or start a business that you could not have 
done in your own country."

" There are so many opportunities here and immigrants want to take advantage of them, and they do. And as a child of immigrants, I am very proud that our community that works hard and does everything possible to progress, grow and give your family a better future. "

Juan, ¿qué haces en la firma? 
"Soy el abogado asociado aquí en Atlanta. Represento a nuestros clientes en las cortes. Represento a nuestros clientes cuando están en su ajuste o sus entrevistas de ciudadanía, y trabajo con el equipo legal para asegurarme de que todo, desde una moción de fianza hasta una solicitud de ciudadanía, se haga a tiempo para que nuestros clientes puedan realmente construir un futuro mejor. " 

¿Por qué elegiste practicar la ley de inmigración? 
"Yo sabía que quería practicar la ley de inmigración desde que era un voluntario en un grupo de tutoría después de clases en la Universidad. Terminé trabajando con un grupo que era en gran parte hispano. Los niños allí me tomaron cariño y terminé convirtiéndome en un profesor de verano a través de AmeriCorps. Trabajar con ellos realmente vi los problemas que afrontaban, que a menudo era la incertidumbre sobre el estado migratorio de sus padres y si estarían allí, de un día a otro. Ver a los niños tan nerviosos, y no tener esta estabilidad sólo me rompió el corazón. Fue entonces cuando dije que quería ser un abogado de inmigración, tratando de ayudar a estos niños en ayudando a los padres y ayudándolos a lograr esa unidad familiar. "

¿Qué es un dato curioso sobre ti? 
"Yo diría que el hecho de que en realidad soy un autor publicado, técnicamente. Escribí un artículo en la escuela de derecho sobre los tratados del espacio ultraterrestre internacional que se publicó en el informe de derecho internacional de Emory. Así que sí, es un dato divertido. Supongo que aparte de mi experiencia en inmigración, estoy feliz de ayudar a cualquiera que tenga preguntas urgentes sobre la ley en la luna "

Educación sobre el Cinco de Mayo 
Como es el mes de mayo, ¡podrías haber celebrado a principios de este mes, cinco de mayo! 

Lo que muchos no saben es por qué se celebra tanto en los Estados Unidos y no tanto en México. Algunos piensan que es el día de la independencia de México, lo cual no es correcto. 

Se celebra la derrota del ejército francés durante la batalla de Puebla en México el 5 de mayo de 1862. No se debe de confundir con el día de la independencia de México.

Los días feriados en los últimos 50 años o más han crecido para tener un fuerte enfoque comercial en los Estados Unidos. Centrado en las ventas de comida mexicana, bebidas y música. En México, por lo contrario, no se celebra de la misma manera, solo con una pequeña conmemoración principalmente en la ciudad de Puebla, donde se hace un desfile militar y una batalla simulada. ¡Cuanto más sepas!

Zaira, ¿qué significa para ti el día de las madres? 

"Día de la madre, para mí es un día en el que honramos a nuestras madres por todo el apoyo, los sacrificios y las lecciones que nos enseñaron. Esa mamá puede ser cualquiera que fuera una figura materna en tu vida , podría ser tu madre biológica, tu abuela, una tía que jugó un papel importante en tu vida. "

" Estoy eternamente agradecida con mi madr e, Aleida, ella es una inspiración y renunció a su carrera como dentista en República Dominicana para darnos una vida mucho mejor en los Estados Unidos." 

"La razón por la que decidió criarnos aquí es porque reconoció que, como familia, había limitaciones que posiblemente no permitirían que mi hermano y yo alcanzáramos todo nuestro potencial si permanecíamos en mi país. Pero si estábamos en los Estados Unidos, entonces el cielo seria el límite. "

“ Mamá. Feliz día de la madre . Te quiero. Gracias por todo lo que has hecho por mí. " 

A medida que se acerca el día de conmemoración, ¿qué significa para usted ser el cónyuge de un miembro del servicio durante estas vacaciones?

"Como cónyuge militar, estoy agradecida de que mi esposo esté vivo y pueda seguir sirviendo a los Estados Unidos. Ha sido desplegado varias veces y somos bendecidos y afortunados de que todavía esté aquí hoy. " 

"También recordamos en el día de los caídos, que la vida que construimos en los Estados Unidos viene a un costo muy alto.  Muchas personas han perdido a sus seres queridos mientras prestan servicio y es importante reconocer y recordar que la razón por la que somos un país libre y la razón por la que vivimos en ambientes y comunidades seguros es debido a los sacrificios hechos por nuestros soldados. " 

" A todos los que lloran a un soldado caído, me siento con ustedes y les agradezco a todos por su servicio y espero que encuentren paz y consuelo sabiendo que su muerte no fue en vano, y nuestro país y muchas personas en nuestro país los aprecian y los admiran por lo que hicieron por nosotros. " 



¿Qué te inspiró a servir a la comunidad inmigrante y a trabajar en la ley de inmigración? 

" Cuando empecé a trabajar para varios abogados a la temprana edad de 17 años , me resultó que estaba trabajando con abogados que servían principalmente a la comunidad Latina."

"La razón principal por la que elegí la ley de inmigración es porque creo que las personas en los Estados Unidos tienen oportunidades de crecer de maneras que nunca podrían hacerlo en cualquier otro país. Creo que, en Estados Unidos, usted puede obtener una educación que no habría sido capaz de conseguir en su país de origen, se puede obtener un trabajo o iniciar un negocio que no podría haber hecho en su propio país.” 

" Hay tantas oportunidades aquí y los inmigrantes quieren aprovecharlas y lo hacen . Y como hija de inmigrantes, estoy muy orgullosa de que nuestra comunidad que trabaja duro y hace todo lo posible para progresar, crecer y dar a su familia un mejor futuro. "
