AgriSafe in Action: May 2019
May is Mental Health Month
Join the U.S. Ag Safety and Health Centers’ effort to promote resources for farmers and rural communities. In response to growing concerns about the lack of resources and support for farm workers and families who are facing difficult economic conditions and higher rates of suicide in rural and agricultural communities, the U.S. Agricultural Safety and Health Centers are actively participating in Mental Health Month (May 2019).

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide remains a significant public health concern and is among the top ten causes of death nationwide. Farmers have been identified as a high-risk population, with suicide rates consistently above those of the general population. Farm work includes many factors that are also related to suicide risk, including economic volatility, social isolation, and managing chronic pain. Stigma and privacy concerns in the agricultural community are associated with mental health issues.

Weekly themes:
  • Science of Stress and Suicide Risk – Week 1 (April 29 – May 5)
  • Referral Resources – Week 2 (May 6 – May 12)
  • Coping with Substance Abuse/Opioids – Week 3 (May 13 – May 19)
  • Cultivating Resiliency – Week 4 (May 20 – May 26)
  • Stop the Stigma – Week 4 (May 20 – May 26)

Nurse Scholar Spotlight
Jean M. Matthews, MSN, RN
Jean Matthews is a dynamic health care professional who has always been true to her farming roots. Jean grew up working on her family's farm in Colerain, NC where they raised corn, peanuts, soybeans, tobacco, cotton, and livestock. She is currently employed with the Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program at East Carolina University where she works primarily doing health assessments with farmers, fishers, and loggers at a rural federally qualified health care center in Ahoskie. She said that working with these populations made the Nurse Scholar program topics extremely applicable to her practice.

Any nurse who works in a rural setting would find the information learned during the Nurse Scholar Program beneficial ” states Jean.

AgriSafe is fortunate to also have Jean serve on our board of directors. We appreciate her commitment to the field!
