Every two years, WSAE participates in a compensation and benefits survey with a group of over 30 state societies of association executives. The report gives you access to survey results from information provided by over 900 association executives across the U.S.
The national and Wisconsin-based report analyzes such data as gender by position, average salary and salary increases by position and years of experience, leave and vacation policies, retirement and insurance benefits, and CEO contract conditions.

WSAE Summit - Strut Your Stuff
Show your peers what you've got
We're looking for participants for a quick-fire session at the 2019 Summit highlighting your hacks and best ideas. WSAE association and industry partner members are invited to submit. Submissions should be educational in nature and not a product or service promotion.
The Summit will take place on October 28-29 at the Potawatomi Hotel and Casino in Milwaukee. The Summit attracts 150+ attendees representing professionals at all levels employed by a number of associations, as well as companies that provide a product or service to the association community.

New President/CEO named for WH&LA

The Wisconsin Hotel & Lodging Association (WH&LA) is pleased to
announce that Kirsten Villegas was selected as WH&LA's new President,
CEO effective June 1, 2019 following the retirement of longtime President,
CEO Trisha A. Pugal, CAE on May 31.
Villegas was most recently the executive leader of NAIOP
Wisconsin - Commercial Real Estate Development Association, and before
that was the Executive Director of the Wisconsin Builders Association.
Previously she also served as the President of the Waukesha County Historical
Museum.

AMPED now serves three multiple sclerosis research groups as full-service clients
AMPED Association Management has been selected to manage two multiple sclerosis research groups (MS), North American Imaging in Multiple Sclerosis (NAIMS) and International Multiple Sclerosis Visual System Consortium (IMSVISUAL). AMPED will provide full-service management, including meeting planning, marketing, web management, financial management and governance.
AMPED's Emily Viles-Monari will serve as the Association Manager for both organizations. "While these organizations are different in how they are structured, who they serve, and what they focus on, they share a vision for improving MS care," said Viles-Monari. "I'm thrilled to be in the unique position to help them tackle that together through their specific lenses."

VISIT Milwaukee CEO resigning at the end of the year
Paul Upchurch, current President and CEO of VISIT Milwaukee, announced he is resigning at the end of the year. "It's been a long decision, but I have another opportunity," Upchurch said. "With the DNC and all the wonderful things that are happening in Milwaukee and for VISIT, it just seemed like a good time."
Upchurch has led VISIT Milwaukee for more than 9 years, starting in March 2010. During his time, tourism numbers double and he helped the Democratic National Convention (DNC) Host Committee secure the 2020 bid. Upchurch will stay in his role until the end of the year to help with DNC planning as well as plans to expand the convention center. "We just need to make sure we have a convention center that can accommodate the demand we're getting," Upchurch said.
The search for his replacement has already begun.

IOM Summer Institute
Institute for Organization Management is the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation's professional development program for non-profit executives.
For over 95 years, Institute has educated association, chamber, and other nonprofit leaders across the country through its national program, highly rated curriculum and high caliber instructors. Thousands of executives have attended Institute sites across the country to strengthen their management skills, learn industry best practices, and gain a broad national perspective from peers. Institute has helped them build stronger organizations, become stronger business advocates and better serve their members. In addition, you will earn points toward your CCE or CAE certification as Institute's curriculum is directly tied to the bodies of knowledge of both the American Society of Association Executives and the Association of Chamber of Commerce Executives.
Midwest Summer Institute will take place at UW-Madison, June 9-13, 2019. The early registration deadline is April 19, after which enrollment increases $200.
Upon completion of the Institute program, graduates receive the IOM recognition which allows them to use the letters "IOM" in public mention and professional correspondence. The IOM recognition signifies the completion of 96 hours of course instruction in nonprofit management and commitment to the industry.

The human face of digital transformation
You installed a new LMS, CMS and AMS; redesigned the website; migrated to the cloud; and purchased the latest computers, printers and tablets for your staff. Was it a digital transformation? Sorry, you're only about halfway there-maybe not even. You've got the technology covered. It's the transformation process that's trickier to understand.
Googling digital transformation might only add to your confusion. The definitions are both vague and sweeping. Most include a disclaimer that the process will unfold differently from one organization to another. Here's a sample of the language from Wikipedia:
Digital Transformation (DX) is the novel use of digital technology to solve traditional problems. These digital solutions enable inherently new types of innovation and creativity, rather than simply enhance and support traditional methods.
From my perspective, digital transformation refers to how we use technology, not what technology we are using. It means applying the power of electronics to optimize governance, operations, administration and member services in entirely new ways. Although it might sound like technology is the driver, people are the real power behind this phenomenon.

ASAE joins letter in support of Equality Act
ASAE joined other trade and professional associations this week in a letter of support for the Equality Act, which would ensure federal protections for LGBTQ individuals. The bill (H.R. 5) is set to get a vote in the House this week and would amend the Civil Rights Act of 1964 to explicitly prohibit discrimination in the workplace on the basis of sexual orientation and gender identity.

Pennsylvania legislation threatens private certification
ASAE is concerned that a bill introduced in the Pennsylvania House poses a threat to private certification. In its current form, House Bill 811 could inappropriately interfere with the right of many private credentialing organizations to adopt and enforce their own ethics codes and procedures.

A controversial copyright directive passed by the European Union is more likely to complicate global copyright law than force associations to police copyright themselves, a legal expert on intellectual property issues suggests.

Public Affairs Council research finds high trust in associations
A new report from the Public Affairs Council and Morning Consult, "Surround Sound," shows that trust in associations is high. The report, which surveyed almost 200 congressional staffers and federal employees, found that 8 out of 10 of the respondents think trade associations are trusted sources of political information.

New legislation aims to repeal UBIT on fringe benefits
On May 2, Senators Ted Cruz (R-TX) and Jeanne Shaheen (D-NH) introduced the bipartisan Preserve Charities and Houses of Worship Act to repeal taxes on nonprofit fringe benefit offerings.

Labor department appeals association health plans ruling
On April 26, The Trump administration filed a notice of appeal of a recent court ruling invalidating the Department of Labor's final rule on association health plans (AHPs). ASAE and the Coalition to Protect and Promote Association Health Plans support the administration's decision to appeal the lower court ruling to the Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia.
