Thank you to all who contributed to and/or attended Team ABC's Autism Awareness Event in honor of NIS alumnus, Brooklyn and NIS student, Carter, on April 27th.  We'd like to give shout-outs to Coastal Kitchen and Daiquiri Bar for donating their space and delicious food, our raffle donors, our Platinum Sponsor: Robert Sparer, our Gold Sponsor: Jeffrey Wells, our Silver Sponsors: Kristin Bierbauer, Jim Cardon, Steven Cohen, Jarrett Freeman, Kimberly Guilfoyle, LCD Elevator Repair, Inc., Mark Shulman and Carol Stillman, and our Bronze Sponsors: Brittany Cassarino, Edge Initiatives, Mark Rickard, and Kristen and Michael Savino.  WE ARE MOST GRATEFUL FOR THE ENDLESS WORK OF MELISSA and ERIC SWAILES in hosting this event, and to their loving family and friends for helping secure amazing raffle prizes and attending/donating to this event!
We are proud to report that, to date, we made $12,000.  You can still contribute by donating online at

$10,000 GRANT

It is with much excitement that we received a $10,000 grant from the AXA Foundation to help us break ground on our sensory garden construction. This grant was awarded in honor of our 23rd Annual Golf Outing honoree and long-time NIS supporter, Howard J. Douglas.

Special thanks to our fabulous music teacher, NICOLE STETSON and all of the teachers for putting so much time and effort into making the NIS plays such a fantastic and memorable experience for all!

What better way to kick-off Better Speech and Hearing Month than to join the family of  NIS students, Zachary and Aiden Lemen, at the Town of Brookhaven on May 2nd as they picked up the proclamation for Apraxia Awareness Day, which will take place on May 14th.  Special thanks to the Lemen Family for raising awareness for apraxia!

Spring is here, and with it comes spring fever ( a feeling of restlessness and excitement felt at the beginning of spring ).  Children may seek sensory input through unsafe ways such as crashing into or jumping off of things.  Heavy work activities can help calm your child and help them feel more orientated in space. Click here for ways to incorporate heavy work at home.

On Wednesday, April   10th, NIS students played a human version of Hungry Hungry Hippo!  In April, NIS celebrated  Week of the Young Child   and Wednesday is "Work Together Wednesday."  What better way to work together and celebrate being a child?  Plus, the children were able to build core strength!  Hip Hippo Hooray!

May 8th is Staff Appreciation Day!  Please read this letter from our Parent Council to learn about ways you can recognize our staff for the work they do at NIS!

We are proud to announce NIS's third annual
on MAY 18th
We ask that you wear  BLUE & GREEN  on  this date , and to educate as many people as you can about developmental disabilities and the related therapeutic and educational services our school provides to children and their families. This is a one day movement which we hope will foster understanding and dispel myths about people with developmental disabilities, as well as spread awareness of our school and its role in benefiting pres choolers in need of special education and therapeutic services.
A great way to spread awareness is through social media. Please share our Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, and LinkedIn pages with your friends and ask them to 'like' our page and support our school. You may wish to donate to NIS in recognition of the work we do on behalf of children with developmental disabilities by visiting,  making a check payable to Friends of NIS, or enclosing cash in an enclosed envelope clearly marked with your name and address.

We look forward to celebrating NIS DEVELOPMENTAL DISABILITY AWARENESS DAY and thank you for taking part in it.
Thank You!
