Lactation Counselor Training Course & CLC Certification Exam
July 29th-August 2nd 2019 I 8:15am-4:30pm
Las Vegas
|
|
The Lactation Counselor Training Course is a comprehensive, evidence based, breastfeeding management course with a strong focus on clinical counseling and assessment skills. Participants build on theoretical foundations to gain practical skills and verify competency as well as optimizing their ability to solve basic and complex clinical breastfeeding issues. This college level course prepares participants for professional work in the hospital, in public health, and community settings.
The Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC) is the premier national certification in Lactation Management for the United States. CLC certification holders have demonstrated competence in the clinical lactation skills and knowledge that are essential to help breastfeeding families. CLCs can provide assessment, counseling, and interventions for optimal and sub-optimal breastfeeding. The CDC refers to CLCs as lactation professionals who are members of the health care team (2014 Breastfeeding Report Card). Research has shown that the education required of CLCs prior to certification is associated with improved breastfeeding exclusivity and duration. The Certified Lactation Counselor
Certification is accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) based on the ISO/ IEC 17024 standard.

Health How to Improve Access to Care for Teens
|
|
There is a growing understanding adolescents and young adults need healthcare geared specifically to their needs, and distinct from services provided to adults or young children. Watch the
TAG Talk video
from the HHS Office of Adolescent Health (OAH) to learn about a New York clinic focused on the unique needs of adolescents and young adults. In the video Dr. Angela Diaz, Director of the Mount Sinai Adolescent Health Center, shares how health professionals can take a unique approach to providing health care to young people.
Ensuring adolescents have access to high-quality, teen-friendly healthcare is one of the
Five Essentials for Healthy Adolescents
identified in the national call to action,
Adolescent Health: Think, Act, Grow®
(TAG). Without access to high-quality, teen-friendly services, some adolescents may be unable to meet their immediate healthcare needs and may not establish the healthy habits that can lead to better outcomes later in life.
Adolescents may face a range of external
barriers to accessing the healthcare
they need. These barriers can include challenges with navigating the healthcare system, concerns about privacy and confidentiality, shortages of providers, conflicts with school and work schedules, unavailability of adults to escort them to appointments, and financial challenges. Read
TAG Research Reviews
for more information on adolescents’ access to healthcare and other essential components of adolescent health.

May is National Physical Fitness
and Sports Month
|
|
Did you know that May is National Physical Fitness and Sports month! Take the challenge and spread the word!
Adolescents-Be Active during National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
Hosted annually in May by the President’s Council on Sports, Fitness & Nutrition (PCSFN),
National Physical Fitness and Sports Month
encourages everyone to out and get active. The recently updated
Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans
recommend adolescents get 60 minutes of exercise each day. Unfortunately, many adolescents do not exercise the recommended amount. In fact, only one in five adolescents in the United States meet these activity levels.
Why is Physical Activity Important?
Regular
physical activity
can produce a wide range of health benefits for developing adolescents. It can help control weight, strengthen muscles, reduce fat, and promote strong bone, muscle, and joint development. Exercising can help prevent chronic diseases like heart disease, cancer, stroke, and type 2 diabetes. Additionally, physical activity can improve sleep, reduce stress, and increase self-esteem. According to the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention
, physical activity also benefits adolescents’ brain health. Exercising can improve cognition, including academic performance and memory.
How to Encourage Physical Activity
The Office of Adolescent Health’s Adolescent Health Library provides important resources for parents, caring adults, and youth-serving professionals on
adolescent physical health
and nutrition.

Around 3,500 babies die from sleep-related deaths every year. We can change those numbers by having better conversations with caregivers about what safe sleep recommendations look like and why following them can save a baby's life.
To help support and spark those conversations, take
this
video quiz that reviews recommended safe sleep practices. The quiz is not a test; instead, it is an interactive teaching tool to help health professionals engage families in conversations about what safe sleep looks like and why it is important.

The Nevada Statewide Maternal and Child Health Coalition, in coordination with Washoe County Health District, is launching the Go Before You Show® campaign statewide. The mission of Go Before You Show® is simple -- to affect social awareness and create long term change by promoting the importance of women seeing a doctor early in their pregnancy to help improve their health and the health of their baby. Women are encouraged to see a doctor early if they think they might be pregnant or before their twelfth week of pregnancy.
The coalition has flyers to distribute to the community, if your organization wants flyers contact Tasha Choi by email

The mission is to reduce the impact of substance use in Nevada. One of the primary goals is to prevent alcohol and drug use among women of childbearing years and women currently pregnant. To achieve this goal, they have partnered with many of the treatment centers in the state that treat pregnant women struggling with addiction. Overall, for State Fiscal Year 2013, SAPTA funded 22 treatment organizations, providing services in 68 locations throughout Nevada. Together, these providers had 11,907 treatment admissions.
