Member Spotlight:
Give us some background on yourself/your business.
Our seven log cabins were built on the shores of Otter Lake by my grandparents (Ilmari & Flora) and opened in 1937. My parents (George & Ruth) purchased the resort in the 1950s, and expanded and grew the business until their retirement in 2012. I am proud to be the third generation owner/proprietor of this special place.
The cabins offer full kitchens and baths, cozy comforts, and Scandinavian décor.

How many years have you been in business?
Manninen’s Cabins have been family-owned and operated for over 80 years. Rented by the week, the cabins will re-open to guests on June 29, 2019. The regular season, starting in 2020, will run May-September.

What’s an interesting fact about your business most people don’t know?
Our largest cabin (Yksi #1) was originally an old log farmhouse nearby that was purchased, disassembled log by log, and reassembled on the Manninen property in the 1930s. It showcases the original Finnish square log building techniques. Visible hash marks are seen on the logs, which were made to ensure they were reassembled in the correct order!

Do you have any advice for new business owners?
Don’t just meet the needs of your customers. Exceed them.

What brought you to the area?
I grew up in Chassell and at Otter Lake, and graduated from Michigan Tech. My career in Great Lakes and environmental policy has spanned over 25 years, but I’ve always had the dream of moving back to the Keweenaw and running the cabins. My career now allows me the flexibility to make it happen.

What are your business's goals?
To offer a place for people to reconnect and unwind in the beauty of Michigan’s Upper Peninsula. Manninen’s Cabins is a family-oriented resort and includes boats with the cabins for fishing, paddling and sailing/surfing. Manninen’s Cabins is and always will be a place where kids can be kids. A traditional Finnish sauna is also available.

How does being in this community affect your business?
The Keweenaw offers so much history and beauty, which only broadens the appeal to visit the area and stay for a week (or more) to explore. The area’s Scandinavian heritage is also something that Manninen’s Cabins celebrates and promotes.

Our roots run deep in the Keweenaw
Upper Peninsula Power Company was created in 1947 through a merger of three utilities. One of them, the Houghton County Electric Light Company, earlier acquired the interests of Peninsula Electric Light and Power, which began operating in the Keweenaw in 1884 – just five years after Edison invented the light bulb.
From the Edison bulb to high-tech electronics of today, you might say UPPCO has been providing “ U.P. Power ” for more than 130 years.
