Hello,

Thank you for your continued interest in the Laskin Road Bridge Replacement & Widening Project in the City of Virginia Beach.

Ongoing Project Activities

  • *NEW* Daytime single-lane closures on westbound Laskin Road at the Linkhorn Bay Bridge scheduled for Tuesday, May 5, weather permitting, for implementation of a minor shift to traffic on the east end of the bridge. Once completed, this alignment will be in place for at least one year as bridge replacement activities continue.

  • Driving timber piles at the Linkhorn Bay Bridge on Laskin Road, between the hours of 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.

  • Excavation for utility improvements

  • Maintaining erosion and sediment control measures throughout the project

  • Clearing of trees and brush in the vicinity of the Linkhorn Bay Bridge and surrounding waterways to support widening the road and construction of the new bridge

  • Temporary pavement installation to support traffic shifts and construction on Laskin Road

  • Pile driving for a retaining wall in the Linkhorn Bay
Traffic Alerts:

  • *UPDATED* Nightly closures on Fremac Drive are expected to resume on Sunday, May 3, as early as 9 p.m. and end no later than 6 a.m., weather permitting, for several weeks. See map below for detour. The nightly activities are not expected to affect through traffic on Laskin Road.

  • *UPDATED* Travelers should expect single-lane closures between Winwood Drive and Red Robin Road between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m., Monday-Friday, excluding holidays. No scheduled lane closures are currently anticipated on Saturdays or Sundays.

  • A traffic shift and feeder road closure are in effect on Laskin Road between Red Robin Road and Gay Drive, as work progresses on the project.

  • Motorists wishing to head in the opposite direction on Laskin Road should anticipate making safe, legal U-turns onto Laskin Road west/east at one of the following locations:

  • Winwood Drive
  • Cardinal Road

  • Safe, legal U-turn access on Laskin Road will not be possible between Winwood Drive and Cardinal Road for the duration of the traffic shift, potentially through 2021. See map below.

  • The feeder road between the Linkhorn Bay Bridge and Red Robin Road is closed due to ongoing construction activities.

  • Travelers are advised to be cautious when navigating the work zone, follow posted signs, and observe the reduced speed limit of 35 mph.

Project Overview:

Construction on the Laskin Road (Route 58) Bridge Replacement & Widening Project is currently concentrated between Winwood Drive and Red Robin Road. All work is weather permitting.

Activities are focused on replacing the existing bridge over Linkhorn Bay, which is located one mile east of the First Colonial Road intersection, as well as significant drainage/storm water, water and sewage improvements.

The current bridge was built in 1938 and was later widened in 1956. The bridge is in overall fair condition.

The bridge will be widened to five travel lanes, with sidewalks on both sides. It will be built to accommodate future expansion to six lanes across. See the expected configuration for the finished bridge.
