Alcohol and COVID-19

There has been a significant increase in alcohol sales since the beginning of COVID-19. With this increase and the media attention on alcohol, there is an additional need for accurate information about the health impacts of alcohol use.  Here are 4 things to know about alcohol and the immune system:

  • Alcohol consumption contributes to a wide range of health problems and can weaken the body's immune system.
  • High-risk alcohol use reduces the body's ability to fight off illnesses.
  • Chronic high-risk alcohol use can weaken lung immune responses and increases the risk of developing respiratory illnesses, such as pneumonia and acute respiratory distress syndrome.
  • Alcohol use does not stimulate the immune system or increase resistance to illness.
This information is from the Canadian Centre on Substance Use and Addiction. To see the entire info-graphic and much more information click Here

Please check out our brand new video on alcohol issues in Iowa addressing increasing middle school student use, adult alcohol-involved deaths, and the numbers of hard liquor sales outlets, sales and profits. The video highlights the need for effective prevention, especially Community Coalitions working together on alcohol, drugs, and other behavioral and mental health prevention efforts as well as treatment for these issues.

Iowa Youth Survey postponed for one year.

Governor Reynolds' COVID-19 related proclamation on 5/20/20 included postponing the IYS until 2021. This will cause many of us to adjust our evaluation plans and assessment work.
