PBEM COVID-19 Response & Preparing your Community for future Emergencies/Disasters
Leads:
Glenn C. Devitt, Program and Information Specialist
Portland Bureau of Emergency Management; Duane Hanson, Past South Tabor Neighborhood Association; Jan Molinaro Sunnyside Neighborhood Association.
Background:
During this unprecedented time where government, community, and non-profits are coming together to respond to a international pandemic, it can get some neighbors thinking on how they might better prepare for future emergency situations and situation where access to infrastructure and grocery stores might not be available. Now is a great time to encourage preparedness in your neighborhood. To learn more about hazards in the Pacific Northwest go
here.
Overview:
Glenn, also a past Sunnyside Neighborhood Association emergency response volunteer, will start the conversation about emergency/disaster preparedness by sharing Portland Bureau of Emergency Management's (PBEM) response to the current COVID-19 crisis and take questions. He will then share resources and information available through PBEM for community members and groups, like neighborhood associations, to prepare for future emergency situations.
Next, Jan and Duane will share their experience as neighborhood association volunteers working to prepare their community + neighbors for an emergency. They will share recommendations, lessons learned, along with their experience with the
Neighborhood Emergency Teams
(NET), and answer your questions.
Purpose:
Understand what PBEM is responding to COVID-19, learn some tips and resources to better preparing your community for future emergency response while it's in the forefront of our lives.
*Please feel free to invite others interested in emergency preparedness to this meeting. We also invite others to share their experiences too.

Meeting Concludes
Virtual meetings are a little more challenging to stay engaged for a long period of time. We will strive to keep the meetings closer to 90 minutes. Given this is our new normal for anywhere from 3-12 months, I'd appreciate your thoughts/feedback on our monthly LUTC meetings. Should they happen every month? Topics appropriate for this time? Duration of meetings? Please email thoughts to me, or participate in a poll at the end of this meeting. Cheers, and be well!

Using Portland's Neighborhood Greenways during COVID-19
It takes all of our cooperation to make this program successful.
Before you head out, please:
- Stay home if you’re sick.
- Stay local and close to home.
- Only visit Neighborhood Greenways on your own or with members of your household, no gathering with others.
- Bring all supplies—food, water, hand cleanser, face coverings—needed for a short trip.
- Plan for where you will use the restroom if you need it. Public restroom access is limited across the city.
- If a Neighborhood Greenway appears crowded, leave and come back another time.

NEW - Slow Streets Project
The Portland Bureau of Transportation (PBOT) has started a new initiative called Slow Streets | Safe Streets to respond to the Covid-19 public health crisis.

Sunday Parkways Goes Virtual
One of SE Uplift’s favorite traditions - Sunday Parkways - goes VIRTUAL in 2020. Not only will it be a month-long celebration but everything will be available online.
Instead of holding the May and June Sunday Parkways in the traditional way, PBOT wants to partner with you to bring Portlanders together in a new way that is safe and
fun. For May’s all-digital Sunday Parkways, PBOT and Kaiser Permanente have organized a series of digital events for Portlanders, including exercise classes, bike repair tutorials, and art and wellness projects.
To support our local vendors and organizations, we will be showcasing Portland’s businesses on their
virtual platform
. See SE Uplift's May Newsletter for full article.
