May 2020

Greetings from PCAP!

It has been a busy few months for PCAP, considering the world has turned upside down for many. I've completed the year-end reporting, and I'm currently working on the 2020/21 Workplan.  The 2019/20 Annual Report is available to view on our website!  PCAP also created three Species At Risk workplans this year, for the Little Brown Myotis, Monarch and Swift Fox.  They will be available on our Resources webpage soon!

Coming up this week, is World Migratory Bird Day, I have fond memories of spending the day at the Last Mountain Bird Observatory 2 years ago with my daughter and later that evening,  our youngest daughter was born. It was a good day and I look forward to bringing them out to LMBO next year.

The next Native Prairie Speaker Series webinar will be May 19th, where Jody Daniel, PhD candidate from the University of Waterloo, will be discussing grassland songbirds! Register here. Jody's presentation will be recorded and available on our YouTube Channel. You can also register for the June NPSS webinar, where Dr. Ryan Brook will be discussing tracking the spread of wild pigs. Register here.

Native Prairie Appreciation Week 2020 (June 14th - 20th) is coming up fast! The tour, that was supposed to be held in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Ministry of Agriculture and the Society for Range Management, was cancelled. Instead we have a week of webinars planned to appreciate native prairie and provide some training for those interested. There is more information below and on on our NPAW webpageWe'll also be doing our Youth Poster Contest and  Native Prairie Photo Contest again this year!

And finally, we would like to thank our sponsors for their generous support :  Camp Wolf Willow, EcoFriendly Sask, K+S Potash, Ranchers Stewardship Alliance, Saskatchewan Cattlemen's Association, SaskEnergy, SaskWater, Wildlife Habitat Canada and Environment and Climate Change Canada, as well as the continuous support of all the PCAP's  Partners

Have a wonderful month everyone! Stay safe and healthy!

PCAP Partner Spotlight...
Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation
Submitted by Chelsea Walters, SWF-Director of Communications & Marketing

Established in 1929, Saskatchewan Wildlife Federation (SWF) is a non-government, charitable organization made up of over 33,000 members from across the province. Our mission is to ensure the wild life legacy we leave to our children surpasses that which we inherited, and we do this through our 3 main programming tiers: habitat acquisition, fisheries enhancement, and outdoor education.
Through our Habitat Trust program, SWF has secured over 70,000 acres of habitat lands for wildlife, and helps to manage an additional 167,000 acres through the Fish & Wildlife Development Fund.
Our outdoor education programs have served over 60,000 youth in Saskatchewan over the last 5 years, with initiatives including our Conservation Camps, Youth Conservation Leadership Program, Classrooms in the Marsh/Classrooms on Ice, the Fish in Schools program, National Archery in Schools Program, poster programs, fish artwork contests, and more. Each of these programs leads youth toward a greater appreciation for Saskatchewan's natural landscape and wild inhabitants, under the framework that developing a connection with nature translates into stronger support for conservation practices.
As the administers of the Saskatchewan Fish Hatchery, and with the support of the Ministry of Environment, SWF is on the cutting edge of fisheries management and aquatic habitat enhancement in the province. We have over 120 active enhancement projects around the province, with more being added every year, and take an active role in advocating for the aquatic species of our province through advisory committees, species at risk recovery teams, and aquatic invasive species prevention.
SWF is also leading the way for women in conservation across the country through spearheading the national Advancing Women in Conservation Summit, a gathering to discuss women's issues and empower female leaders in conservation, set to be held late fall, 2020. Follow us on Facebook to stay up to date.
Throughout the Covid-19 epidemic, SWF has become a community leader in providing quality Saskatchewan-based outdoor education solutions to families through the development of several activity books, new interactive online programs, and backyard habitat activities. Find these and many more online at swf.sk.ca .
