YWCA GLENDALE AND PASADENA'S CEO,
TARA PETERSON RECEIVES 25TH SENATE DISTRICT'S WOMEN HEROES OF THE PANDEMIC AWARD

On May 26th, CA Senator Anthony Portantino will recognize Tara for her extraordinary work in leading YWCA through the COVID-19 pandemic. In a year forever shaped by a global pandemic, a shadow pandemic of violence against women, and a watershed year for social justice and systems change, Tara demonstrated the imaginative excellence needed to lead the YWCA through this moment. Remaining nimble and responsive to the needs of the community, Tara expanded programming, launched new initiatives and brought the YWCA Glendale and YWCA Pasadena Foothill Valley officially together to streamline operations and impact. The result of these efforts was a record 2,600 survivors served, program expansions from summer to year round offerings to serve 200 girls with violence prevention and STEAM education, and the launch of the Coalition for an Anti-Racist Glendale. Congratulations, Tara! We are so proud of your leadership and how you have shown up for women and girls in our community.
This June, our Domestic Violence Clinical Team will be launching its first online education series to provide the community at large with information on the fundamentals of understanding trauma, the impact of intergenerational trauma in shaping our relationships today, and the tools to build new relationships that promote health and equity. The sessions will run on Wednesdays at 6PM PST beginning on June 2nd, live streamed to our facebook and youtube accounts. Recordings of the series will be available on our youtube.
Registration is now open for Camp Rosie! Spaces are filling up fast, so please register today. Every girl who completes the week long session will receive a $50 gift card, materials for hands on activities, and new YWCA Girls' Empowerment Swag: new t-shirts, totes and notebooks featuring a Jacqui C. Smith Illustration!
We are so grateful to our community of supporters who showed up to make this year's Mother's Day a very special one for the moms in our domestic violence shelter. Moms were provided nightgowns, bras and underwear, and pampering gifts from Victoria's Secret-Glendale Galleria, Glendale First United Methodist Church and Glendale Kiwanis. Thank you all for making this day so special. Moms also received very special gifts from their kids - handmade cards filled with drawings and so much LOVE! Kids were also gifted new pajamas to join in on the celebration and gift opening experience.
Originally scheduled for Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the Glendale Peace Walk will now take place at 2:00PM on May 23rd, the Sunday before the anniversary of George Floyd’s murder. Glendale’s Martin Luther King Jr. Peace Walk will be a moving witness to our passion to continue Dr. King’s work of justice right here in our city until every resident has peace, security and stability. The walk will be a time of inspiration and hope where children, teens and adults young and old can speak to the ideals of Dr. King. Social distancing, face masks and hand hygiene are essential for this event. Walk participants will gather in the parking lot of YWCA at 1:30PM and at 2PM will begin the march, which will end with an uplifting outdoor celebration at Glendale City Church.
