VIDEO OF THE MONTH: "How to Motivate the Unmotivated" by Simon Sinek
We should not assume that a lack of motivation is an intrinsic problem. As leaders, we should first evaluate whether or not we've created an environment that inspires our employees. In order to spark motivation, people must feel seen and valued.
ARTICLE OF THE MONTH: "How Great Leaders Communicate to Create Movement" by Dave Ferguson
I had just finished listening to a 45-minute presentation from someone whose impressive bio included, “industry pioneer, social entrepreneur, author, venture philanthropist and one the greatest positive influences of our generation.”
I was in awe of his accomplishments, but in my mind, I began to critique his communication skills: “Does he have a stutter? He never made me laugh. At times he was boring. However, he did have a clear big idea. He definitely spoke with conviction.”
I would never say this out loud, but then I thought to myself, “I’m a better communicator than him…” and then I wondered, “How come I don’t get the results that he gets?
Have you ever had the experience I just described? You are listening to another leader share their vision, strategy or philosophy and you walk away shaking your head thinking, “She’s good, but not that good. How does she accomplish so much more than me?”
The leaders who create movement and change the world are leaders who are not always the best at giving a speech, but they have discovered how to communicate at a different level.
The best leaders have discovered the secret of level three communication. Their influence goes beyond words or even their actions. Instead, they multiply their influence as others repeat their words and live out their values. Most leaders have figured out level one and two; but it is only the great ones who have discovered level three.

Thank You to Our CT Public Works Leaders
As we celebrate National Public Works Week, we encourage you to take time to let your crew members know how much you appreciate their hard work; they make such a difference in your communities.
Today, we will take the time to thank you, as leaders of your public works departments, for all of your hard work. This past year has presented you with many challenges, and we are so impressed with your resiliency, your creativity and your ability to be strong leaders during a time like no other. The CT public works professionals, over the years, have developed a strong sense of community and that is in large part due to your active participation in making that happen.
Remember that Everything you do Matters! Your crews recognize and appreciate when you are a strong communicator, a consistent leader and they know when you have their safety in mind as you make decisions. Heartfelt thanks for all you do!
