UW-Madison to partner with EV startup Canoo for research on electric propulsion
A California startup developing electric vans and trucks is partnering with UW-Madison in hopes of making electric vehicles more available while reducing the use of limited natural resources. According to the announcement, the College of Engineering will lead the effort, which is also intended to create internships and other opportunities for undergraduate and graduate students. Lorrie Lisek, executive director of Wisconsin Clean Cities, said the partnership appears to align with the group’s mission of advancing sustainable transportation methods such as electric vehicles. “We look forward to seeing their research become action to benefit all of Wisconsin in the future,” Lisek said. Lorrie Lisek: Petroleum alternatives key for emergency response
Wisconsin residents know all too well you need to keep the snow brush in the trunk, even if you’re wearing shorts and flip flops. The ever-changing weather is just a reality we’ve all come to expect and we make sure we’re always prepared. Another reality is the threat of severe weather at any time and in any season. Sadly, climate change is increasing the frequency and severity of these extreme weather events. In Wisconsin, we know all too well the devastation that can come from floods, tornadoes and blizzards, whether it is to our homes or businesses. All of these can cause disruptions to petroleum supplies, whether the natural disasters occur in Wisconsin or along the supply chain. Representatives introduce legislation aimed at reducing GHG emissions
U.S. Rep. Lloyd Doggett, D-Texas, and Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore., have introduced the Green Transportation Act. The legislation directs cities and states to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the transportation sector, the single largest source of carbon pollution in the U.S., which makes tracking and reducing those emissions an urgent priority in mitigating the climate crisis. Because many parts of the country are not accounting for transportation emissions, this represents an important step in working to reduce pollution by mandating the tracking of emissions and the creation of local implementation plans. The bill would help deliver President Joe Biden’s goal of reducing U.S. GHG emissions by at least 50% by 2030. Read the full story

Featured Technology: Electricity
Electricity can be used to power all-electric vehicles and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles directly from the power grid. Vehicles running on electricity produce no tailpipe emissions. The only emissions that can be attributed to electric vehicles are those generated in the production process at the power plant. The electric grid is an easily accessible driving energy. Electricity used to power vehicles is generally provided by the electricity grid and stored in the vehicle’s batteries. Learn more on our Website
