June is National Dysphagia Awareness Month
As June approaches bringing National Dysphagia Awareness Month, IDDSI would like to express our appreciation for the ongoing work of the National Foundation of Swallowing Disorders (NFOSD). NFOSD is committed to providing hope and improved quality of life for those experiencing all types of swallowing disorders. Visit NFOSD and find out more about their resources and activities.  
Global Updates
Australia:  The Australia IDDSI Reference Group launch meeting is scheduled for June 11, 2021. If you are interested to join the Australia IDDSI Reference Group, please contact Australia or register here.
Brazil:  Brasil IDDSI reference group was held, on May 20; it was the first meeting to start the task force for the implementation of IDDSI in the country. The meeting was attended by 37 volunteers including speech therapists, nutritionists, physicians and representatives of scientific societies and industries. If you are interested in being part of the group and helping to guide, promote and support the implementation of IDDSI in Brazil, send an email to Brazil.

Chile: An IRG, supported by Chilean Society of Dysphagia, is being formed, with an initial meeting set for June 1, 2021.
Canada: The Canadian IDDSI Reference Group (CIRG) members and Peter Lam, IDDSI Co-Chair will be hosting a virtual “Canadian Industry Partner Forum” on June 22, 2021 from 1-3pm EDT. Vendor, distributor and manufacturer representatives are encouraged to register now to take advantage of this unique educational opportunity. Discussion topics will include operationalization of IDDSI in the healthcare setting, product labelling, education and training resources, and IDDSI testing procedures.

CIRG also recently launched an Educational Resource for the International Dysphagia Diet Standardization Initiative (IDDSI). This resource was sent out to University Programs in Nutrition and Dietetics, Occupational Therapy and Speech Language Pathology across Canada. The resource is intended to equip students in those professions with knowledge of the IDDSI framework, terminology, and testing methods in order to remain relevant in today’s world of dysphagia management and research. Feedback to date from recipients has been very positive!  
D-A-CH IRG: The DGD workshop has been postponed to Fall 2021, with a date set for October 7, 2021. Registration will be available in late August/early September.

Greece:  The Greek Reference Group will be presenting an A3 poster of the complete IDDSI framework at the 14th – 1st Panhellenic International Congress of Speech and Language Therapy, with the hopes of filling in literature gaps in Greek regarding objective classification of dysphagia diets.
India:  IDDSI is now seeking volunteers to be part of a newly formed India Reference Group, representing diverse stakeholders including speech-language pathologists, health care professionals, food industry representatives, patients with feeding and swallowing disorders and their caregivers. Previous involvement in IDDSI guideline development or implementation is not a requirement. For further information and application, please contact the Indian Reference Group.
Malaysia:  An IDDSI Reference Group launch meeting will held on June 2, 2021. For more information, please see here.
United States:  The USTIRG continues to be very active. A few recent activities….
 
The Implementation/Advocacy workgroup is pleased to announce that our Environmental Survey Scan is currently open and available for participation until May 31st. Read more.
 
Research/Data Collection is getting set to analyze results from the Environmental Survey Scan sent out by Implementation/Advocacy earlier this month. Read more.
 
Education/Training is hard at work on finalizing their PowerPoint 101 Introduction to IDDSI series. This will be made available to the public to customize for specific audiences including: 1) Food Service Workers, CNAs and Caregivers, 2) Food Service Operation Leaders, Culinary Staff, RDNs, SLPs and RNs, 3) Doctors and RNs and 4) Administration.
