We are currently accepting pre-orders for our 2022 Edition Trucker Hat. We have two unique designs we hope you'll love.
Our Red Trucker is The Rnnr Distance Hat, "Keep cool on the hottest days with moisture-managing fabrics that are ultra-breathable and quick-drying. Large side mesh panels target the hottest parts of your head allowing for maximum ventilation for your longer runs. The flexible brim lets you curve it, flip it, or leave it flat to match your style. This lightweight running hat is indestructible. We guarantee your legs will give out before your hat will."
Our Purple Trucker is The Rnnr Trucker Hat, "Everything you love about a trucker hat, plus the performance of lightweight sweat managing materials. The flexible brim let's you flip it up, curve it or keep it flat- whatever your style."
John and Emily have each been wearing one of these hats for the last month in order to test them out. John has been sporting a Distance Hat while Emily has been sporting a Trucker. HPRS has never had more comfortable, well made, stylish hats as these two right here. Quantities are limited to just 50 of each design, cost $30 each (Not included shipping and taxes), and we encourage you to pre-order yours TODAY!

There is a considerable amount of challenge preparing for the Niwot's Challenge every year. This year pushed our patience to the limits as the course encountered numerous snow storms in February and March. Every year we host 4-6 "Book Setting" days where we encourage participants and guests to join us for bushwhacking "fun" as we hide the books Niwot's participants will rip pages out of. This year we had numerous days of post holing through knee to waist deep snows, which required a Herculean effort by the Nitwits to get the event ready for race day.
This year's event was slated for Saturday April 9th, but with snow melting slower than we would have liked creating hazardous conditions on various aspects of the course, we elected to push it out a

week to April 16th. We were rewarded for our gamble as the snows melted, temps rose, and we had one of the more perfect weather weekends in Niwot's history. This has become the norm the last few winter's as we prepare for the event, so we've collectively decided that Niwot's will no longer be hosted the closest weekend to 4/20, but instead the closest to Cinco de Mayo. No.. we're not starting the race with a shot of tequila instead of the ceremonial puff of ganja, but we'll have both available for any Nitwit looking to take on the task.
"The Barkley of the West" is one of a small handful of events that mirror's the concept created by The Barkley Marathons held annually in Tennessee. Participants have the same 60 hour cut-off to navigate the full 100 miles of the course, ripping pages from books hidden along the way, which prove a participants following of the course. In other words, arriving at the checkpoint with your pages signifies that you were "out there" in the correct "there." At Niwot's, every participant is known as a spirit animal until they complete the Chief's "Fun Run," at which time they will receive a Chief's name that coincides with their story. A Chief's "Fun Run" must be completed within 30-hours of starting, and Nitwit's must meet the cut-off for finishing a Burn Loop in order to earn the opportunity to continue.
You probably already guessed that not a lot of people are interested in participating in something like this, and you'd be right. The event is free of charge, and we cap participation at just 35 participants. Though, we've yet to have 35 start. This year we welcomed 30 applicants to the fray, with only 12 of them making it to the starting line. This year, of those 12 starters, only 7 would find all of the books on the Burn Loop, all of them qualified for the Chief's Loop. Five finished the Chief's "Fun Run": Chief Wrong Way finished his 5th Chief's Fun Run, the events record. Chief One Bearing finished for the 3rd time. The two of them were accompanied by one of our new Chief's, Chief Gollum, who finished for the first time. The other new Chief is Chief Solo, who was so damn fast that he navigated the entire course alone. He finished in a course record time of 23:15. Springbok became just the second female to ever find all 24 books, however she did so coming in three hours after the official cutoff. She did not achieve Chief status, but she did show us some true grit.

The HPRS Advisory Board meets periodically to discuss the many facets associated with The Human Potential Running Series. The purpose of these meetings is for the board to provide invaluable input, feedback, and collective brain storming on the past, present, and future of HPRS. The board reports directly to HPRS owner and RD John Lacroix, who takes the boards advisement/input in mind in order to make informed decisions about the direction of the series. Board members serve a one year term, and may be invited back for the following year.
The HPRS Advisory Board met for the first time in 2022 on April 22nd. In attendance was HPRS RD John Lacroix, HPRS Asst RD Emily Royal, and Board Members Miguel Isaza (+ his wife Dianna), Andrew Ralston, and Kristin McKinley. Absent was Frank Anello.
Topics Covered at our April Meeting
Debrief of the following events: 2021 Sawmill Trails Runs, 2022 Stories Ultra, Franklin Mountains Trail Runs, Niwot's Challenge, The We Belong Virtual Series, The Fat Ass Series, and our Navigation Clinic.
Risk Management: John successfully completed a Risk Management For Outdoor Programs Certification program through Viristar. Through this course John completed a thorough audit of HPRS' Risk Management protocols and procedures, and created a Risk Management Strategic Action Plan for HPRS. A major overhaul of our Risk Management Plan is now in process.
This was John's personal goal for HPRS to be more compliant with industry leading risk management protocols and procedures due to the continued increase of incidents within our sport. We determined that we will be recruiting volunteers for our new External Risk Management Committee. John also successfully completed the Road Runners Club of America (RRCA) Professional Race Director Certification Program, and renewed his Wilderness First Responder (WFR) Certification through Wilderness Medical Associates (WMA).
Future of Memberships: We continue to think about and tinker with our membership program. We are planning adjustments to our perks for the 2023 Membership program that includes a heavy discount for our BINGO! event and other perks.
We Belong Virtual Series: We will be adjusting the price for 2023 and it will no longer be Free to Members, but members will enjoy a deep discount.
Fat Ass Series: We have decided that the 2021-2022 Fat Ass Series Season will be our last. We have not had enough interest to continue the program as a virtual series, and our in person Fat Ass Series was terminated due to risk to our other permits. We are working on other initiatives for our community instead.
Permits: The Sangre de Cristo Ultras and Cuchara have both been awarded a 5-Year Permit from the USFS San Carlos Ranger District. Our events in Fairplay are also receiving a renewed 5-year permit for South Park Trail Runs, Silverheels 100, and Last Call Fifties. We have also successfully completed the USFS Civil Rights Compliance Review, and our evaluation for accessibility, and continue to be the leaders in inclusivity, equity, and diversity in our sport.
2023 Entry Fees: We decided that we will not be increasing our rates in 2023. Stay tuned for an article written by John about the average cost of entry for trail and ultra events in Colorado, and our putting the brakes down in chasing other RD's incremental yearly price increases.
