Grant Opportunity - Ride United: Transportation Access
United Way Worldwide is excited to launch the 2022-2023 Ride United: Transportation Access Grant Application for all United Ways and 211s to apply for funding to reduce transportation barriers in their communities. We believe that everyone should have safe, reliable, and easily accessible transportation. We also believe that providing transportation options in real-time ensures that both everyday needs and episodic needs are met. Transportation access holds the power to unlock opportunities that would be otherwise out of reach, and it offers a clear pathway towards ensuring the human right of universal basic mobility.

In June of 2018, Lyft partnered with United Way and 211 to launch Ride United: Transportation Access to address pressing transportation gaps by providing rides to help people access essential medical services, complete education programs, get to job interviews, and more. Since inception, RUTA has served neighbors in over 2,000 cities and towns and has provided over 135,000 free and discounted rides. Now, headed into its fifth program year which will run July 1, 2022, through June 30, 2023, UWs and 211s are invited to apply for these competitive grants.

Older Americans Month

May is Older Americans Month! This year’s focus of Older Americans Month is aging in place, “how older adults can plan to stay in their homes and live independently in their communities for as long as possible.” We know as more older Americans age in place, they’re often assisted by, or serving as, informal caregivers. This number has increased by 10 million individuals over the past five years.

To learn more about caregiving, check out the recent blog post on 211.org on the Caregiver Outreach Program, a partnership between United Way Worldwide, 211, and AARP. The Caregiver Outreach Program brings together AARP’s expertise on caregivers and the 211 network of local resources, trained staff, and infrastructure to deliver targeted resources and support towards informal caregivers in communities across the country.

Caregivers participating in the Caregiver Outreach Program have called 211s for assistance helping older adults with aging in place and helping individuals regain independent living, such as transitioning from nursing homes or assisted living back into caregiver’s homes. 211s participating in the pilot have shared local and national resources to help caregivers and older Americans not only with basic needs and financial assistance, but also with emotional support to reduce anxiety and loneliness among callers.

Read more about Older Americans Month via the Administration for Community Living (ACL). If your 211 is interested in learning more about the Caregiver Outreach Program, please contact Mary Miller.
AARP Caregiver Outreach Program
In August 2020, #Team211 at UWW launched a pilot project with AARP to support 211s in building a proactive engagement program that aims to reach informal caregivers within their service area. Each 211 built a unique implementation plan and is working alongside partners to identify, recruit, and support caregivers in their community proactively via: text, email, phone, mail and/or IM providing. The goal of the project was to reduce stress and increase access to essential information and resources for the benefit of caregivers and their families. This work has continued on with five more 211s joining the cohort and there are plans for nationwide expansion.

This work supports not only this unique population but is helping to build insight and understanding for wider project development. Ultimately, we know that when the subject matter expertise of 211 navigators is applied proactively to upstream client needs, we can make a real difference in the lives of the communities we serve. As we look ahead, we would love to know more from you, the network, about the work you are doing and/or want to be doing in this area.

If you could take a few minutes to have a representative from your organization complete the following survey, it would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you as always and if you have questions or would like to learn more you can reach out to Natasha Bugey at Natasha.Bugey@uww.unitedway.org.

  • Find Help (Aunt Bertha) Townhall
  • On May 16, 2022, UWW hosted a Town Hall event featuring Find Help (Aunt Bertha) and 211. • Just One Firefly
  • Alexander Star was inspired to create Just One Firefly, written in collaboration with 211 Broward, as a resource of hope for those who are struggling with thoughts of suicide, mental health, and dealing with everyday challenges. "I was inspired to write Just One Firefly in support of the 211 helpline and the valuable work they continue to do each and every day to help those who are struggling,” said Singer/Songwriter Alexander Star. Stream the 211 Anthem here and continue to spread the word utilizing the Just One Firefly toolkit
