A recent Lifeway Research study found that most pastors say the primary people problem they face in their churches is apathy or a lack of commitment. Scott McConnell, executive director of Lifeway Research, said, “Many people can be a member of a church, but not participate in the work of the church.” The article did not give a cause for this lack of commitment, but it did make me wonder what is at the root of this apathy.

Anecdotally speaking, I do think this lack of commitment has been a problem in the church for a very long time. As a child I remember messages about the “lukewarm” Christian and the problem of apathy in the church. As an adult, I notice a lack of commitment from many in the church, and I hear this echoed from other pastors as well.

What could be the cause of this apathy? I think the problem is too nuanced and complex for a simple answer. It could be unregenerate church membership, lack of discipleship, love for the things of the world, or a lack of understanding the role each member has in the body of Christ. The list of possible suspects could continue.

I think the solution to this apathy can be found when we do not divorce the Lord from His body, the church. We need to return to a robust theology of the all-glorious Christ, recognizing the lordship of Jesus over His church as He works through His church accomplishing His purposes in the world today. We need a theology that turns our hearts away from the enticements of the world and sees Jesus as more valuable and desirable than the fleeting pleasures of the world. “These challenging people dynamics all affect the unity within a local church,” said McConnell. “Unity matters greatly to Christ as seen in His prayer for His followers in John 17. Many things can disrupt that unity and one of the most common is not outright disagreement, but silently abstaining from what the church is doing together.”
