The course catalog listing in-person classes and Zoom classes will be available in early August on the ALL website. The course catalog will also be sent via e-mail to those on our e-mailing list.
President's Message
Our theme for this month’s newsletter is community, which struck a chord with me this week. ALL is a community of lifelong learners and friends. On April 28th, we gathered to celebrate the end of the ALL year at one of only two in-person events this year. It was a happy occasion. However, this past week, we learned of ALL President Jim Lathrop’s sudden death. Jim brought our ALL community together serving as president during the past two years of the pandemic. Those who knew Jim well realize how lucky we were to be guided by this witty, kind, knowledgeable, and unassuming leader who was committed to the mission of ALL. Through his unwavering leadership, Jim kept our organization strong, and the Board of Directors will strive to continue his legacy.

As a community, we are about to end this ALL year and begin anew in August with registration and a new semester of classes in September. Our community is excited about the fall when we will have the option to take courses on campus or on Zoom, depending on the coordinator’s preference. It’s nice to have choices so let’s be grateful and get back into the ALL swing of things.

There is much to be done to bring us back to our pre-Covid days. What we need you to do is to remind your ALL friends and acquaintances to come back to ALL if they took a break. Encourage new members. If you have been thinking about offering a course, that’s great! Contact the curriculum committee or Nancy Weida at lifelonglearning@capecod.edu to start the process. Do you have some time to give to our fabulous organization? How about becoming a desk volunteer? You will learn more about ALL and help answer members’ questions, plus make new friends and acquaintances. Join a committee and help the various parts of ALL run smoothly. Contribute a piece of writing or a photo to Reflections. Lastly, think about running for the board of directors. ALL is a community of active, interesting, fun people who are interested in not only taking classes, but also the social and organizational aspects of our organization. So, step up - come out of the Covid haze - get back and give back to our organization. You’ll be happy you did!

ALL Annual Spring Social Recap

ALL President Dianne Tattersall welcomed attendees and invited Dr. John Cox, President of Cape Cod Community College, to speak. He discussed changes to the college, the progress of the new science building, and how happy he is to welcome ALL back to campus in the fall.

After a two-year hiatus due to Covid, fifty-one members of ALL gathered at the Cape Codder Resort on April 28th for the annual Spring Social.

Everyone was happy to be out and about, catching up with their ALL friends in person as well as enjoying a spread of delicious appetizers and a variety of beverages.

"Just Right"

Like Goldilocks looking for that perfect place to lay her head, David and I spent the first ten years of our retirement looking for our own Nirvana. Maine, where we had restored an old farmhouse, was blissful in the summers, but less than ideal in February. In 2005, filled with anticipation, we moved to Summerville, South Carolina, a lovely suburb of Charleston. As much as we loved Charleston, we missed our seven kids, most of whom were in New England. In addition, after thirty-some years of teaching math and science at a number of independent schools, separately and together, we felt we were missing something.

Several years later, we had an EUREKA moment. Why had we never thought of retiring to the Cape where I had spent most of my summers since 1938? My parents had retired there, we had friends there, the weather was moderate, and we could see the kids. In May 2010, we arrived in Harwich with Hugh and Daisy, our two rescued Springer Spaniels.

In the fall of 2010, at a holiday party, we fortuitously met Stephen Bloom, Shakespeare Scholar and ALL Coordinator extraordinaire, who, with his wife Barbara, introduced us to ALL. We enrolled in a class in the Spring of 2011 and ALL has been our home ever since.

The first class we took was Part One of Italian Renaissance Art, taught by the brilliant Penn Szittya, retired professor and Director of Medieval Studies at Georgetown University. Eventually, David coordinated a course with Penn, and a number of classes alone. David loves art, science and religion and I love history. Over time became we decided to coordinate several ALL courses together.

Over the ensuing years ALL became the focus of our lives. It is where we have met our closest Cape friends, have taken and offered courses and served on numerous committees. I was on the Board and served as ALL President for a year with our dear friend Jim Lathrop as Vice President.

Together David and I have coordinated art classes about the Louvre and history classes about cities exploring New York and London. In addition, David, a man of many talents, coordinated classes about such disparate subjects as “The Hubble Telescope,” “Art and the Bible,” “Consciousness” and “The History of Science”.

During the past two years, Covid and ZOOM have challenged us but our loyal fan base has continued to sign up.  Many of our class members have become dear friends and we appreciate their forbearance. In September we hope to teach on campus and in person, on a huge screen. We will be exploring “A Trip Through the Metropolitan Museum of Art”. You can see the full course description in the soon-to-be-published ALL Fall 2022 Catalog. We are excited to be back on campus and look forward to seeing you then.
