Spring and Summer Tennis in Vermont
The last two weeks have made it clear that Spring has come to Vermont. The outdoor courts – both hard and har-tru – are open, high school tennis is in full swing, USTA League play has returned, our Tennis in the Parks and Parks and Rec programs are preparing to go live, and we are making plans to host a series of adult and junior events for all ages and abilities of players this summer. After two years of limited competitive contact, Vermonters are playing hard and making new friends through the sport we all love. USTA Vermont offers something for everyone, so please join us as we all make plans to GET OUT AND PLAY!

Attention Vermont Tennis Enthusiasts
On June 9 and 10, Errol Nattrass and Burlington Tennis Club will host a Level 1 PTR Coaching Certification event with the hope of building a more vibrant and inclusive tennis community throughout our state. To support widening the pool of qualified tennis instructors, USTA Vermont will award scholarships of $250 to up to 10 qualified applicants. This scholarship includes a partial payment toward the participant's annual 2022-23 PTR membership fee of $325 and the two-day workshop session fee of $100.
Level 1 Certification prepares coaches to do the following:
- Structure age and stage appropriate tennis activities for beginner to low intermediate players of all ages
- Apply sound teaching/coaching principles to deliver safe, enjoyable, and goal-oriented learning opportunities
- Use techniques to increase player self-awareness, continued development, and effectiveness
The certification workshop will be held at Burlington Tennis Club on June 9 & 10 from 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. each day. Please reach out to Errol Nattrass with any PTR certification-related questions at errolfn@gmail.com.

VT USTA Summer Singles Flex Leagues
VT USTA offered flex leagues for women and men to play singles matches against other Vermont players from mid-May through mid-September. The participants schedule their own matches to avoid conflicts with their other summer activities. The matches may be played indoors or outdoors depending on the participants’ preferences. Fifty-one players have signed up to play at the 3.5 and 4.5 levels (men) and the 3.0, 3.5, and 4.5 levels (women). USTA Vermont, Inc. will be funding prizes for the winners of each flight since this league does not advance to district or sectional championships. Here’s to some fun competition for all those playing singles!
“Tri-Level” Doubles League – Teams Start Forming in August
If you like playing doubles with a few of your friends against a variety of opponents, the “Tri-Level” League is for you. VT USTA will start forming teams in August at the 3.0, 3.5, 4.0, and 4.5 NTRP levels for men and women. Teams consist of 2-6 players and each match is one doubles match (2 players from one team compete against 2 players from another team). The league is called “Tri-Level” because, years ago, a team was composed of two 3.5 players, two 4.0 players, and two 4.5 players (three levels of players on one team). Currently, each doubles team plays other doubles teams at their same NTRP level, so the “Tri-Level” name is a bit of a misnomer. The first-place VT team at each NTRP level can compete in a Sectional Championship held in mid-January in Western Massachusetts to play other teams from New England. If you are interested in playing on a team, please send an email to the USTA Local League Coordinator, Beth Cook, at vt-league@newengland.usta.com.

Since mid-April, Vermont’s high school boys and girls tennis teams have been working hard to perfect their serves, volleys, overheads, and ground strokes. Competitive match play has been fast and furious as the weather cooperates, allowing our teams to travel and improve their records ahead of the upcoming State championships.
From on May 26-28, tournament directors Jerry Knickerbocker (boys will meet at Leddy Park) and Errol Nattrass (girls battle at Burlington Tennis Club) will host the 2022 season ending championships. Support our student athletes by coming out to cheer them on!
