Happy Spring Members,
SWAP MEET
WAS A GREAT SUCCESS! This year broke the record for attendance and income for our event. Have to start by thanking all the volunteers who helped make this event happen. Eric Lundt stepped up to the Chair position and made it possible to have the event. He has also agreed to carry the torch next year. Tell him thanks for his efforts. Behind Eric was a long list of volunteers who contributed their time to make this happen. Many thanks to all who provided the help to pull this off.
ABATE OF WASHINGTON will have funds to continue the fight in Olympia next year. The war chest grows. We will not stop fighting for motorcycle freedom of choice and safer highways for the riders of Washington State.
One note… the headcount was record-breaking, but not for ABATE MEMBERS. Less than 100 members were present. We need members to support the events, be it Chapter Poker runs or state events. Show up and shake off the Covid blues.
SPRING OPENER
Get ready for the best party in the state. Live bands and bike show, and all the trimmings. This event covers it all. This year we are in a new location. We have 135 RV hookups, and the camping is on a first-come basis. Do not panic. With 135 RV spots, there is plenty of room. In comparison, we only had 42 RV sites at the Ranch in Easten. So there’s lots of space.
BOD
The board meeting went well. All the Chapters have events planned, so make sure to get out and support the people who do all the work to make this happen. Event flyers are being sent out, so check your email. If you are not receiving emails, contact the state and get on the list.
MOTORCYCLE AWARENESS RIDE
MAY 22ND will be the date of this year’s motorcycle awareness ride. We will be at EAGLE LEATHER. KSU at 1 pm, then heading to the state capitol. See ya there.
NEWSLETTER REPLACEMENT
Shari Carlsberg has done her job and it is time for the next chapter of the newsletter position to take place. Looking for a person to step into this position. Keep in mind, this is more about collecting all articles, chapter reports, flyers and pictures, proofreading, and working with Constant Contact who assembles the submissions and creates the Newsletter. As an organization, ABATE of Washington has been rather successful over the past couple of decades in getting legislation passed and made into law. From; handlebar height, the “helmet is a helmet”, red-light bill, blue dot tail light, motorcycle anti-profiling, enhancing the penalties/charges for injuring a ‘vulnerable user’ (motorcyclist), motorcycle parking, ABATE of Washington has had ongoing success in many small ways in the state legislature. However, ABATE’s efforts to bring the option of lane-sharing to Washington state have met with opposition and political game-playing by state agencies and legislators. Currently, the only way to reduce this opposition is to change the balance of power in Olympia. | |

MOTORCYCLISTS HELP OUT UKRAINE
Motorcycle brands across the spectrum of biking are coming together to assist people affected by the Russian invasion of neighboring Ukraine, while multiple manufacturers have announced they will no longer sell bikes or supply parts to people in Russia, including Harley-Davidson, Suzuki, and Honda, which is donating one million Euros to the Japanese Red Cross as humanitarian support for Ukrainians suffering through the enemy occupation.
Joining in on a growing list of economic sanctions, Yamaha, BMW, and Polaris have also halted exports to Russia in the wake of the ongoing crisis.

“Texas” Larry Walker is a nationally certified Rider Coach for the novice, intermediate, and advanced training. He is the Senior Instructor for Navy Region Northwest, a long-time motorcyclist rights advocate, with well over 40 years of riding experience.
There has been a lot of buzz around the interwebs about the various legislation around the west allowing riders to move between lines of traffic. There are two major versions, lane splitting or sharing and filtering. (Yes, there is no real difference between lane sharing and lane splitting, just the terminology.) The major difference between the two methods lies with the speed of the traffic. With lane splitting/sharing the traffic being passed is in motion, while in filtering the traffic being passed is stationary.

We had an amazing turnout for the Swap Meet. I hope you all were able to come and find some great deals and see some friends. Shout out from Chad and me to all those that worked so hard to make it a hugely successful event. As in years, past products shared a booth with State membership. I know State signed up quite a few new members including one gentleman that is wanting to run for office and is a huge proponent of motorcycle rider rights. We also did well with products, especially with the smaller metal reflective signs and t-shirts. | |

PACIFIC COUNTY
Preparations for the annual Pigout Charity Run continue. On May 14, we will be gathering at the Roadhouse in Chinook WA, at 9:00 am. KSU at 10:00 am. Good times, good food and a ferry ride will highlight the run.
April showers included too many Snow Showers. Hopefully May will be warmer! Many roads still have sand and gravel patches on them after Winter so be vigilant. Stay Sharp, and Ride Safe.

Filling in the Blanks
Most people have a pretty clear memory of how they got hurt. Frequently their memories are punctuated with very specific details. “That son of a bitch looked me right in the eye before turning left.” “The front door mat was a bright pastel color.” “The impact made a sound just like an M-80 going off.” But when you go through something traumatic, like a motorcycle wreck, the brain isn’t focused on making memories—it’s focused on survival. The same mechanisms that keep the brain sharp enough to escape immediate danger may also make it harder to accurately recall the event.

He Passed Me Going 90 MPH
In just about every motorcycle case we have there
are allegations that our client was speeding. There are a couple of important things to know about the issue of motorcycle speed. The first relates to the reliability of witness observations. The second deals with the way courts deal with favored drivers exceeding the speed limit.
Witnesses are almost always wrong about
motorcycle speed. It may be based on the relatively small size of motorcycles compared to other vehicles. Or it may be based on witness bias.

Public Health and Relations Crisis
The concept of public health has really expanded. It used to focus on disease. Now it includes things like gun deaths. New York’s Governor recently declared
a gun violence disaster emergency. This new strategy treats gun violence as a public health crisis. We have a public health crisis of our own in Washington. It doesn’t have anything to do with guns. Or COVID-19. It has to do with motorcycles.

The evidence rules have a big impact on what the jury gets to hear (and what it doesn’t get to hear). Evidence can seem a lot like an iceberg: 10 percent visible, 90 percent below the surface.
