A Note from the LCAC
Executive Director

I start by sharing a moment of gratitude and celebration. I am grateful to have spent 17 days in Mexico, mi tierra ancestral. I feel grounded and inspired. From the invitation by Portales de Arte in Chiapas and the National Museum of Mexican Art to inaugurate an exhibition featuring 37 contemporary artists in San Cristobal de las Casas, to visiting the Mayan archeological site of Palenque, and visiting Mexico City with the Biennial of the Americas.

Above all, I am thankful for and proud of the LCAC’s international community of artists, among them, our long-standing partners, Betsaida PARDO y Jairo HELI (Pictured Above). They are amongst the most exceptional scenic creators, producers, educators, and researchers!

On May 14th, PARDO-HELI premiered a performance sponsored by the LCAC at the renowned Palacio de Bellas Artes in celebration of the 90th anniversary of the first professional dance school in Mexico: La Escuela Nacional de Danza Nellie y Gloria Campobello.

Your support makes this all possible! It is an honor to represent you, Denver, and the LCAC abroad!

A Note from a LCAC Team Member

Summer brings a sense of adventure! The LCAC has been visiting artisan communities that we support through our boutique, Hijos del Sol, from Oaxaca to Chiapas. I'm making a promise to myself to travel to Panajachel and Chichicastenango in Guatemala.

I want to learn from the mutual exchange of ideas and resources from our vast network of international supporters and partners. It's inspiring to see indigenous weavers and artisans turn to the cultural arts to provide a better future for themselves and us. They are the keepers of knowledge and traditions preserved over hundreds of years.

I’m grateful that with the LCAC we all get to experience the richness of Latinidad. Our boutique truly is a bridge between worlds that weaves tradition, wisdom, and creativity.

Palacio de Bellas Artes Welcomes
The LCAC to Mexico City
The LCAC makes its debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes (Palace of Fine Arts) in Mexico City with the talent behind Pardo-Heli, including dozens of students and academics accompanied by sound designer Topiltzin Borsegui. Betsaida Pardo and Jairo Heli’s latest choreo-drama, Las Voces Matria Resistencia, is dedicated to the Campobello sisters’ rebellious, revolutionary, and transformative legacy.

After the Mexican Revolution, Nellie and Gloria Campobello were elected to help shape the new Mexican identity through dance at the National Dance School. Las Voces Matria Resistencia challenges spectators to reflect and connect through the catharsis of ritualistic dance.

The LCAC is lucky to count on PARDO-HELI as an extension of our Team who are dedicated to building bridges between Colorado and Mexico.

Hecho en Colorado Exhibit at El Pueblo History Museum Showcases Chicano Art (PBS VIDEO)
This month, The History Colorado’s El Pueblo Museum opens a new exhibit that centers 40 artists of Indigenous, Mexican and Chicano descent that call Colorado home.

Our show highlights a variety of art with contemporary and ancient traditions. It includes works by notable artists such as Carlota EspinoZa, Carlos Fresquez, David Ocelotl García and Carlos Sandoval.

The show comes at a time when many Chicano murals created in our state are considered "endangered." The nonprofit National Trust for Historic Preservation released its annual report of “America’s 11 Most Endangered Historic Places”.

The FREE exhibition is open Monday through Saturday from 10 AM to 4 PM and will be on display until December 2022.

Inspiring Our Youth
LCAC Interns Make History at the LCAC
Hi! My name is Ivan Rodriguez. I'm a senior at the University of Denver majoring in Spanish with two minors in Math and Computer Science. I was raised in a Hispanic household in New Mexico, which inspired my passion for community and innovation.

My time at the LCAC, as a Marketing and Digital Infrastructure Intern, has allowed me to gain a better understanding about communicating effectively, problem solving through new technologies, and developing a deeper appreciation about our historic contributions as Latinos. It has been a once in a lifetime opportunity to make history with the LCAC!
Hola, my name is Cindy Loya! I'm a local artist and student at MSU Denver and joined the LCAC internship to assist with cataloging the Abarca Family Textile Collection. This experience gives me an opportunity to employ research and my passion for ancient Mexican textile techniques.

Working with the LCAC has strengthened my connection to various communities, local artists, and collaborators. I look forward to working with the LCAC for another semester!
Mentoring Through Public Art Projects
On May 7, 2022, the LCAC unveiled the first mural project of our reimagined Youth + Artist Programs to prepare the next generation of public artists. Since National Night Out on August 3, 2021, we have collaborated with the Denver Foundation (Strengthening Neighborhoods), the Denver Police Department, and Denver Arts & Venues (Urban Arts Fund), and Councilwoman, Jamie Torres to support the budding career of 16-year old Denver artist, Tyson Tafoya. After his mentorship with Redline Resident Artist, Victor Escobedo,
Tafoya shared:

The LCAC changed my whole view and perspective on art and what it involves. It allowed me to express myself and get into the art game by putting my name out there. I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity. All it takes is faith, dedication, and commitment. #LCAC4Life!
