Southern States Cooperative Celebrates a Century of Serving Customers in the Southeast
Southern States is celebrating its 100th anniversary in 2023 with events focused on its customers and employees.

Founded in 1923 as Virginia Seed Service to supply seed to Virginia farmers, Southern States quickly expanded into feed, fertilizer, crop protection, and into surrounding states, and became known as Southern States Cooperative in the 1930s.

Southern States Cooperative is a Richmond, Virginia-based agricultural retail and service cooperative that provides a wide range of production inputs, including crop nutrition, seed, livestock feed, animal health supplies, energy solutions, as well as products for the farm and home. Southern States serves its farmer-members and customers through more than 84 company-owned retail locations, primarily in the states of Maryland, Virginia, West Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina and Kentucky.

The Southern States location in Gloucester has served the community since 1961 and celebrated the cooperative’s 100th anniversary on Saturday, April 22, 2023 with a Customer Appreciation Event.

Gloucester County Unveils New Logo

Gloucester County is pleased to present its new logo, which represents the green of our beautiful parks and the importance of Gloucester's pristine waterways.

The logo was unveiled in a Board of Supervisors meeting on April 4. It was designed by Tourism Coordinator Susan Ammons as part of a wider branding initiative for the county.

Ammons chose shades of green and blue that matched Gloucester County’s seal, which has a beehive on a green field, surrounded by a blue circle. The new logo keeps that history in mind while being clean, modern, and locally relevant.

It’s important to note that this logo doesn’t replace the County Seal, which has been used throughout history to authenticate official documents.
Gloucester is joining the ranks of many other Virginia localities, including James City County, Richmond, and Virginia Beach, which use logos to represent their identities to residents and visitors.

“The bottom line is that Gloucester County has so much to offer, not just to tourists, but to those of us who call it home,” said Quinton Sheppard, the county’s Community Engagement & Public Information Manager. “We have beautiful waterways, open farmland, community parks, and our rich history that complements those assets.”

In all, Gloucester anticipates spending less than $3,000 on vehicle logo replacements and less than $1,000 on business card replacements, in comparison to the $200,000+ budgets some other Virginia localities spent to rebrand.
