May Asset of the Month: Youth Programs

“Youth sports aren’t just about the sport, it’s about fun and

teaching your athletes life lessons.” –Coach John Burns

What You Can Do

• Make sure that your children are participating in positive, asset-building youth programs

that they enjoy. If they’re not, help them find new programs that meet their interests.

• When your younger children join a new program, help them with introductions to their peers. They’ll feel more comfortable and confident when they know the other participants.

• Role-model positive behavior when attending sporting events. Good sportsmanship in the

bleachers helps youth practice managing their own responses to challenges and successes.

Water Conservation as a Way of Life

May is officially Water Awareness Month here in California and everyone in Morgan Hill can do your part to make Water Conservation a Way of Life with these simple tips:

Indoor Conservation Tips:

·      Wash full loads of clothes and dishes

·      Fix Leaks around the house. Fixing leaks inside and outside the home can save 27 to 90 gallons of water each day.

·      Install faucet aerators

·      Install high-efficiency toilets

·      Keep showers under 5 minutes.

·      Turn off water when brushing teeth and shaving

·      Fill your bathtub halfway or less

Outdoor Conservation Tips:

·      Recycle indoor water and irrigate your garden

·      Transform your lawn into a low water usage garden

For more information about Water Saving Tips visit our Water Conservation website or Valley Water’s Conservation page for more indoor and outdoor water conservation tips.

Let the Rain Do the Watering for You

When rain is in the forecast, remember to turn off your irrigation system and let the rain water your landscape.

When it is time to turn your system on, remember to follow the new watering schedule based on your address:

·       Addresses ending in EVEN numbers: Water on Tuesdays and Fridays

·       Addresses ending in ODD numbers: Water on Mondays and Thursdays

·       No Address: Water on Mondays and Thursdays

Only water as needed - if your landscape is saturated from the rain, keep your system off.

Watering is only allowed before 9 a.m. and after 7 p.m.

Watering is limited to 15 minutes per valve/zone.

Find out more on the Water Conservation website.

Composting is Now the Law!

Please remember to place yard waste, food scraps and food-soiled paper towels and napkins in your green organics cart. Composting this material instead of sending it to the landfill helps reduce greenhouse gas emissions and is used to create nutrient-rich compost.

Call 408-842-3358 to speak with a Waste Zero Specialist about Recology’s programs and for support including staff trainings, educational materials and free food scrap recycling containers.
