FINANCIAL WORKSHOPS

NCASC clients completed a series of four sessions of financial literacy called M.O.R.E. Money (Maximizing Our Resources Everyday). The purpose of these workshops was to increase consumers’ financial literacy, eliminate barriers to access to the US financial and banking system, and teach the basics of personal finance. The sessions were as follows:

BANKING: The clients got vital information on the importance of opening a bank account with insured banks, the importance of saving money, and paying for what we need not what we want.

TECHNOLOGY: This session discussed the many ways of digital and non-traditional ways of moving money with the use the technology.

INSURANCE: The clients got information on different types of insurance like renters, cars, health, and life insurance.

AVOIDING SCAMS: This session taught how to avoid scam calls, emails, links, messages, or even ads that are fraudulent. The clients learned how to keep their important documents like SSN, and medical insurance in a safe place and avoiding sharing their usernames, pin, and personal devices.

~Nidhal Mohsin, Cultural Orientation Facilitator

”Something very important that I learned in the financial class was to distribute the income in such a way that there was enough for what was necessary and something to save so as not to spend the money on things that I would not need. The second is that I should not trust everything that is offered to me over the phone or the internet, since there are currently people who take advantage of these means to steal from other people, it does not always happen, but it is better to be sure.”

"I believe that taking a financial class can be highly beneficial, as it helps to provide knowledge and understanding of the basics of finance. As a volunteer, I have seen first-hand the importance of proper financial planning when it comes to tasks arrangements, logistics, time, venue, and other aspects of a project."

”It is a great class. It helped me gain some beneficial information I never knew to consider.” (Youth participant)

Hi, my name is Pierre Twaibu, born in Tanzania but I was raised in Nairobi, Kenya, so I say I'm from Kenya. We moved to the States in the summer of 2014. I went to the Illustrious Elizabeth City State University, One of the Historical Black Schools and Universities (HBCU), where I studied Aviation Science with a concentration in Aviation Management, sometime I would like to work for the Department of Homeland Security or immigration-related agencies. I’m a community-oriented person, I love serving the community and socialization. During my free time, I enjoy the outdoors, hiking, traveling, hanging out with friends, or volunteering at local community centers.
