May 2023
This past fall, when we re-started our weekly Friday story time in our Saratoga store, I became – almost by accident – our regular reader and host. What an incredible gift this new role has turned out to be. Not only do I get to spend time with our smallest customers and their caregivers, but every week it’s part of my job to pore through our picture book area and pick out a stack of books to share.

I have encountered so many wonders tucked away on our shelves – books with a message I desperately needed to hear, books with art I could get lost in, books that made me giggle, and books that delighted our young listeners. Here’s a tiny sample of recent delights – books that are great for kids, but would also make wonderful gifts for the adults in your life.

Picture book master Jon J. Muth’s latest, Stillwater and Koo Save the World is a perfect marriage of art and text, in which tiny panda bear Koo has taken on an impossible challenge – to fix everything that is broken in our world. His Uncle Stillwater is on the case, showing Koo the ways he can make our world better, and guiding him to the big idea that progress is made through countless small, kind actions.

In Today Is a Me Day by EV Starkey, with illustrations by Kristiina Haapalainen and Sami Vähä-Aho, the simple words are set over stunning illustrations that celebrate childhood independence and revel in our natural world. A young girl knows the world is calling – but today is for simple pleasures.

If you’ve ever had a cherished friendship where you could be alone together, you’ll relate to Bear is Never Alone by Mark Veerkamp, translated by Laura Watkinson, and with art by Jeska Verstegen. Bear is a great pianist, and the animals want nothing more than to hear him play – but he needs his alone time. The art in this one is incredible too – all in black and white, with bright pops of red. I could stare at these pages for hours.

I hope these books – and whatever other ones you’re reading – fill you with joy and wonder this May!

From the New York Times-bestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, and following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret.

Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person dies by drowning--and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala's long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-year-old husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl--and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi--will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants. A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

Pre-order Highlight

The Oscar-nominated star who captivated the world with his performance in Juno finally shares his truth.

“Can I kiss you?” It was two months before the world premiere of Juno, and Elliot Page was in his first ever queer bar. The hot summer air hung heavy around him as he looked at her. And then it happened. In front of everyone. A previously unfathomable experience. Here he was on the precipice of discovering himself as a queer person, as a trans person. Getting closer to his desires, his dreams, himself, without the repression he’d carried for so long.

At its core, this beautifully written, winding journey of what it means to untangle ourselves from the expectations of others is an ode to stepping into who we truly are with defiance, strength, and joy.
