May 2023

Dear Friends,

Jeff Tipp PSN has decided to retire from active teaching with our Blue Heron Zen Community, and we'd like to acknowledge and applaud all that he has done for our sangha, not the least of which is that he started it, quite a while back!

In so many ways, Jeff PSN has exemplified the qualities that we often describe as necessary for practice -- great courage (to start us off!), great determination (he had a hand in developing so many aspects of our Zen Center; some of you may not know, for example, that he personally chose our beautiful bell in Korea and arranged to have sent home to us), and great trust in the dharma. As many of us know, he has been one of our most committed practitioners, having practiced meditation for over 40 years. We bow in gratitude, and wish him great peace and joy in this next chapter of his life. The following is a message from Jeff psn directly:

My recent absence from online practice due to the Covid symptoms I've had over the past year, marks a new chapter in my relation to Blue Heron.

In 1985 ,when I invited Zen Master Seung Sahn to Seattle and the three retreats he lead in those early years, inspired me to establish Blue Heron Zen Community in my home.

I am remembering the retreats on Vashon Island at Camp Sealth and the cabin Tom Campbell and I built for solo retreats that benefited so many. The 9 Day retreats were another innovation that has grown in full attendance over the years.

Now, at the age of 76, I wish to remain only as Teacher Emeritus, dedicated to the well-being of all who walk the trackless path of Zen. Today I feel grateful for all I have experienced in my practice, while remaining in the ongoing inquiry, "What Am I?”.

Change in Tuesday Evening Practice

Tuesday evening practice will resume in person (and also continue online separately). Starting Tuesday, May 2, the weekly Tuesday evening practice will occur in person at BHZC, from 7:00-8:00pm, and also occur at the usual practice Zoom link online. These will be separate practices, not hybrid, and attendees could join either one. If you are local to the Seattle area, we encourage you to join in person at BHZC. This is part of our continuing adaptation to balance in person and online practice opportunities. We look forward to seeing you in person on Tuesday evenings! As always, check our website for the complete list of online, in person, and hybrid practices.

Buddha's Birthday and Sangha Meeting

Sunday May 7 9am

Please join us for a celebration of Shakyamuni Buddha's birthday on May 7. You may attend in-person or join online.

The celebration will be followed by a sangha meeting. It's a wonderful time for our sangha to meet as a whole to discuss the current well-being and future direction of our community. Members and guests are encouraged to attend and are welcome to add agenda items at the beginning of the meeting, or may contact Abbot Paul beforehand.

Dharma Dialogues

Eric Nord, JDPSN and Zen Master Jeong Ji are offering online Dharma Dialogues. Sign up here with Eric Poep Sa or here with Jeong Ji Soen Sa.

Our Senior Dharma Teachers are offering Online Dharma Dialogues if you would like to discuss your practice and any questions you may have. Please get in touch with them individually to schedule an appointment if you would like a one-on-one Zoom meeting.

Chanting Requests

We invite you to register a name of a loved one who is currently suffering for our Kwan Seum Bosal Chanting, or for Ji Jang Bosal Chanting, for a loved one who has recently died. We will recite these names when we do special chanting.

Looking Forward
