We honor all school nurses bridging healthcare and education, providing care coordination, advocating for quality student-centered care, and collaborating to design systems that allow individuals and communities to develop their full potential!

May is Mental Health

Awareness Month

Americans are experiencing suicide and mental health crises without the support and care they need. According to the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) in 2020 alone, the US had one death by suicide about every 11 minutes — and for people aged 10-34 years, suicide is a leading cause of death.

National Association of School Nurses' (NASN) position statement on The School Nurse’s Role in Behavioral Health of Students states:

"School nurses, because of their regular access to students, are uniquely qualified to identify students with potential behavioral health concerns. School nurses can serve as advocates, facilitators, and counselors of behavioral health services within the school environment and in the community."

Donna ISD Nurse named School Health Advocate of the Month

Donna ISD is proud to partner with Goodside Health to bring healthcare services to their district. Goodside Health providers can assess, diagnose, and treat the most common pediatric conditions – all from the convenience of the school campus.

Congratulations to LeNoir Nurse Marlene Chavez for being featured in the Goodside Health News page as April's School Health Advocate of the Month. She is recognized for being a valuable partner and prioritizing the health of her students.

Near the southern Texas border lies Donna ISD, a district that whole-heartedly supports the health of their students and does what they can to keep their students in class. Marlene Chavez is the nurse at J.P. LeNoir Elementary and a staunch supporter of student health for her campus community.

As an elementary school nurse, Marlene rests easy knowing that students that may not have regular access to healthcare services can now see a Goodside Health provider, from the school health room.

“I’m able to bring a solution that I wasn’t able to before,” Marlene said. “There’s been fewer kids that are sick at school because they’re actually getting to see a provider now.”

Ensuring that families know their students have access to this program is pertinent, and Marlene understands that. That’s why she participates in parent meetings and after-school programming to share with families the benefits of SchoolMed.
