May 2023

President's Message

I can’t believe that it was only a month ago that AFP-GLAC was in the New Orleans! ICON 2023’s theme, “Laissez Les Bons Temps Rouler – Let The Good Times Roll” set the tone for all the goodness that we experienced during our time in The Big Easy. With 3000+ attendees enjoying the educational sessions, networking, keynotes, speakers, vendors, ambiance, and delicious food; it’s evident that the good times rolled consistently. Here’s a recap and a couple of my personal takeaways:

  • ChatGPT is here! Learn how it can help or hinder your work.
  • Diversifying your donor base, staff and board should be a top priority.
  • Having an intimate relationship with your data will help your organization to scale and succeed.

Among other notable observances, May is Mental Health Awareness Month. One thing I know for sure, fundraiser fatigue is real and I hope that you’re taking time to rest, reset and focus on ways to rejuvenate yourself and support others during this time and beyond.

As I take a moment to reflect, it’s evident that we need to approach our work differently and more intentionally than ever before. It leaves me wondering, “How are you letting the good times roll in your organizations?” Are you celebrating your wins? Do your employees feel valued? Are you leaving money on the table or raising dollars and stewarding your donors in fresh and true ways?  I would love to hear from you.

In service,

Remember, we are all here doing great work in the nonprofit space that impacts lives directly. Let’s make sure we take care of ourselves with the same passion we take care of others.

Janet Doak, CFRE

Chapter President 2000

Janet Doak, past president of AFP GLAC chapter made her transition on April 3, 2023. Jan was a invaluable leader in the philanthropic field, and she will be greatly missed.

Jan grew up in Illinois where she received her bachelor’s degree from the University of Illinois and her master’s degree from the University of Idaho.

She married Charles William Doak in 1954 and they had three sons. Charles William Doak after 57 years of marriage predeceased her in 2011.  Charles was active in his ministry and Jan was active in fundraising having a long and successful fundraising career, that started in 1970’s where she began her career after raising her three sons, at the San Fernando Valley Child Guidance Center. She ended her career with a 20-year stint at the House Ear Institute, where she was responsible for raising over $45 million to build their own private facility. The House Ear Institute stands today impacting the lives of many due in large part to Jan’s efforts.

Jan was very active in AFP serving in many roles and as one of the chapters presidents in 2000. She led many initiatives and was a resource to many of our fundraising colleagues. She never said no if asked for help and she always had a great sense of humor.

Jan is survived by her brother, her sister, her three sons, many grandchildren, nieces, and nephews. She will be missed by the fundraising community and the AFP GLAC chapter.

ICON Chamberlain Scholarship Recipient

Carmen Himes

Thank you to the AFP GLAC BOD, SJLI Team, and everyone who is constantly uplifting me and inspiring me to go bigger, grow bolder and reach for the stars. Because of the support from my org and my colleagues at AFP GLAC, I was honored to serve as this year's Chamberlain recipient. The four-day conference was packed with so many treasures. The conference was well-rounded and had some amazing speakers. The breakout sessions were inspiring, and filled with knowledge I am bringing back to my org.

As a Chamberlain Scholar recipient attending the AFP ICON conference in New Orleans for the first time, I had an unforgettable experience filled with learning, networking, and inspiration. Over the course of four days, I had the opportunity to attend various sessions led by experts in the fundraising industry, covering topics ranging from donor engagement to impact measurement.

The highlight of the conference for me was the first keynote speaker, Misty Copeland. Her words were incredibly inspiring and touched on the importance of diversity, equity, and inclusion in all areas of our lives, including the nonprofit sector. Her message of perseverance and determination resonated with me and left a lasting impression.

In addition to the educational sessions, I also had the chance to connect with other Chamberlain Scholars and fundraising professionals from all over the world. The networking opportunities were invaluable, and I left the conference with new contacts and ideas to implement in my own work.

Overall, AFP ICON in NOLA was an incredible experience that provided me with the knowledge, inspiration, and connections to take my fundraising career to the next level. I am grateful for the opportunity to have attended as a Chamberlain Scholar, and I look forward to applying what I learned to make a positive impact in the nonprofit sector.

AFP Advocacy

AFP is pleased to share that the House companion to the Charitable Act (S. 566) is set to be introduced the week of May 15 by Reps. Blake Moore (R-UT) and Chris Pappas (D-NH). As a reminder, the bill would restore and expand the non-itemizer charitable deduction to approximately $4,600 for individuals ($9,200 for joint filers) through the end of next year. AFP has been working closely with these Congressional offices and the national Charitable Giving Coalition to advocate for this giving incentive. The Charitable Giving Coalition plans to send a sign on letter of support to Reps. Moore, Pappas, and other lawmakers who join as original sponsors.
