NETA WELCOMES NEW CORPORATE ALLIANCE PARTNER MEGGER

In Fall of 2023 NETA proudly welcomed Megger as the newest Corporate Alliance Partner (CAPs). NETA CAPs are a group of industry leading companies that NETA has invited to join forces in working together towards a common aim: improving quality, safety, and electrical system reliability.

With a rich history spanning over 130 years, Megger is a well-established company renowned in the electrical testing and measurement industry. Megger's dedication to precision, reliability, and safety has earned a distinguished reputation, and is a trusted partner for professionals and organizations in need of dependable electrical testing and measurement, including monitoring solutions.

We sat down to speak with Shay Yackee, Megger General Manager of Sales North America around the organization's goals, industry advancement efforts, and the impact of becoming a NETA Corporate Alliance Partner.

What are Megger’s product development goals for the next three to five years?

Megger is making significant strides in enhancing our asset management efficiency, particularly in testing and data analytics. Our efforts are primarily focused on increasing testing speed, refining report generation, and enhancing the interpretation of results. By streamlining these processes, we aim to boost productivity and provide more accurate data interpretation. This, we believe, will greatly assist NETA companies in managing assets for their clients more efficiently.

Additionally, we are broadening our online monitoring capabilities for real-time analytics. This move aligns with the growing trend towards immediate data access and interpretation. Proactive management and swift response to potential issues are made possible by monitoring and managing assets in real-time, which we consider key to successful asset management.

Megger, AVO Training, AVO Diagnostics, and States are a family of highly respected companies serving the electrical power industry. How do they interface to benefit the advancement of the industry?

I believe we are strategically positioned to serve as trusted advisors for a broad range of asset management needs, not just in terms of physical assets requiring routine testing and maintenance.

As mentioned above Megger’s expertise also extends to human assets, specifically in areas such as safety protocols, adherence to electrical standards, and comprehensive maintenance training. This comprehensive approach allows us to provide a well-rounded service, addressing all facets of asset management.

Describe the NETA / Megger partnership and what it means to your organization.

I believe that our companies are strategically aligned to serve as trusted advisors for most asset management needs. Our strengths lie not only in managing physical assets that require testing and maintenance, but we also excel in taking care of human assets, ensuring their safety, and providing training on electrical standards and maintenance.

Advanced Methods of Assessing the Health of Transformer Bushings

By Drew Welton, IEEE Sr., VP of Sales, intellirent, Division of Electro Rent Corp .

Lately, you have heard much from the intellirent team about the importance of determining and mitigating water in a transformer’s insulation system. The negative effects of excess water on a transformer’s life cycle are exponential when combined with heat and oxygen. The same is quite true when it comes to bushings. It is common knowledge that the bushing life expectancy is much shorter than the transformer itself, and at some point, replacement will be required. The big question is when, and of course we want to address this before bushing failure happens. When it comes to transformer failures, especially those that are catastrophic, the vast majority are the result of bushing failure.

Megger

TTRU1 Overview

The TTRU1 is the latest handheld transformer turns ratiometer from Megger. Powered by alkaline or NiMH rechargeable AA batteries, the TTRU1 measures turns ratio, up to 250V, with an accuracy of 0.05%. Additionally, the TTRU1 can measure excitation current, polarity, and short-circuit impedance with the same one-time connection setup.

While it is a single-phase source, the TTRU1 allows measurement of single phase, three-phase, and instrument transformers. The TTRU1 is a field-friendly device with an IP54 rated heavy duty over-molded case yet weighs only 2.2 pounds.

On a single NiMH battery charge, the TTRU1 can perform up to 1000 turn ratio tests, and batteries are rechargeable with a standard USB-C cable. The TTRU1 can be updated in the field via the USB-C connection, and results are downloadable to a PC.

To download technical information about the TTRU1, visit the Megger website here.
