Growing veggies with children!

May is the perfect time to start growing ingredients for salads. This is also a fantastic opportunity to engage children introducing them to the world of gardening.

For added fun, children may also wish to keep a journal of this activity!

How to start:

1.Give each child a pot.

2.Have them fill it with good organic growing soil.

3.Have them choose four or five seeds of plants that are easy and fast growing (i.e. radishes, yellow or green beans, Chinese cabbage).

4.Have them label the seeds and write the date with a pen or marker.

Let's talk salad mixes and vegetables!

There are a variety of choices to start your "circle" of salad in a pot. You may start with fast growing mesclun French salad mix to sow in a circle around the container. Next, sow a row of radishes beside the mix and continue with fast growing snap peas. Finally, fill the middle with a few seedlings of bunching onions and rainbow swiss chard. You can consider adding a ready to bloom flower to attract pollinators.

Tips to keep in mind:

  • Use a 12” inch container for easy sowing and moving about.
  • Try and water pots with a clean supply of rainwater that is not too cold.
  • Keep your pots in a safe location away from squirrels, birds and other curious critters.
  • Cover lightly with a see-through plastic - this is another way to speed up germination.
  • Be sure to watch daily for emerging sprouts and remove cover immediately.
  • Keep pots in a secluded area away from drafts and too much sun.

As soon as growth is detected from the first sown pot, it is time to start on your next adventure of backyard gardening.

Remember to have fun, enjoy the process and keep those knees on the ground!
