Hello NTMCA,
I hope everyone that had an Election on Saturday enjoyed a restful Sunday before the work week started. I was fortunate enough to get to cancel this year, but I was sitting on a soccer field in the pouring rain, so I guess the grass is always greener on the other side.
This calendar year is full of elections, local and other, and there's no way to avoid it, so here is my thoughts on the subject.
I read a famous quote by Harry Emerson Fosdick that said "Democracy is based upon the conviction that there are extraordinary possibilities in ordinary people." I don't think he was referring to local elections specifically, but it sure does apply.
In the english language, we have words for people that love books (bibliophile) and people that love food (gastronome) but I couldn't find a word for someone like us, someone that loves the democratic process. We aren't political scientists or party affiliates, or historians, but I did find a new word that defines someone with a love for democracy and due process, "Municipal Clerk" with synonyms: City Secretary, City Clerk, Chief Governance Officer, Town Secretary.
I don't think there is a group of people that believe in democracy more than a group of Municipal Clerks. I remembered that this weekend, as I saw facebook updates and pictures of colleagues working long hours but also being enthusiastic and excited to be involved in their local elections. I hope that this newsletter is a reminder of that to you also. Sometimes elections test our patience, complicate our jobs, and drive us crazy, but we are also facilitating a very important process that matters on a local level and beyond.
Now, please make sure to catch up on all the the NTMCA news below. I'll be running around city hall waiving my American flag.
Sincerely,
Shelley Scazzero
