Lexington Medical Society Physician Wellness Program -
Safe Harbor to Address Stress & Mental Health
This month we want to focus on the need for physicians to prioritize their own wellbeing and mental health. The Lexington Medical Society Physician Wellness Program (PWP) is a safe harbor for physicians to address stress and mental health issues in a confidential manner.
In this video we will hear from Dr. Steven Smith, psychologist at the Woodland Wellness Group, talk about the importance of prioritizing our health- both physical and mental. Through the LMS PWP, Dr. Smith and his partners at the Woodland Wellness Group have counseled hundreds of LMS physicians- active and retired- as well as residents and medical students. Physicians receive eight free counseling sessions per calendar year. These sessions can be in-person or tele-therapy.
The Physician Wellness Program is completely confidential; no insurance is billed and LMS does not know who receives counseling through the program.
We all know that being a physician is stressful. If you need to talk to someone, we encourage you to reach out to the physician wellness program. Take care of your patients by taking care of yourself.

LMS Featured Physician
John Patterson, MD, MSPH, FAAFP, ABIHM
Family Practice
LMS Member Since 1991
Why did you become a physician?
When I was 10 years old, I was hospitalized with post-streptococcal glomerulonephritis. I didn’t realize how sick I was and how scared my family was, until after discharge, when I was told that another child on the pediatric floor had almost died of the same condition. I was homebound in school for several weeks and, due to the habit at that time, received monthly bicillin shots for the next 6 years, when I refused to take anymore and was determined to play high school basketball. I did not grow up in a medical family, though my great-great grandfather was a Confederate civil war physician in Tennessee. Albert Schweitzer, perhaps the world’s best known physician in the 20th century, was my inspiration and role model. He felt he had been given so many gifts that he had to give back. He had a doctoral degree in theology, served as a pastor and was a sought-after concert organist before deciding to become a physician to serve as a medical missionary.

Facing Our Challenges
By Michael Kuduk, KMA President
“Disappointment is an unfortunate part of life.”
I remember those words as a child, and I retold them to myself many times throughout my journey to becoming a physician. My road to practice was strewn with difficulties and was anything but linear. I ran into many obstacles, and while some were harder to overcome than others, I was able to overcome them eventually. Most physicians I meet tell a similar story, as resilience seems to be a fabric which weaves all physicians together.

PHYSICIAN HEALTH & WELLBEING
Mindful Aging - One Day at a Time
By John A. Patterson, MD, MSPH, FAAFP, ABIHM, Founding Co-chair, LMS Physician Wellness Program
We take so much for granted. We act like there will be a tomorrow even though we know tomorrow may never come. Our minds are so often in the past or future and not fully present to this day- the only day in which we actually live. Our minds are so often in some other place and not where we actually are right now. This inattentiveness can lead to medical errors, accidents and a lack of appreciation and engagement with our family, friends, pets, work, personal health and planetary health.

PHYSICIAN FINANCES
The End of an Era - What We are Watching for in '24
By Brian T. Burton, CFP®, CIMA®
For many years until the last, investors had been living under the same mantra of “There Is No Alternative” (TINA) to owning equities, helping prop up stock prices as yields on fixed income were too paltry to bother with. Times have changed; TINA ushered out and TARA welcomed in. Positive real rates are achievable, meaning “There Are Reasonable Alternatives” (TARA) to just owning stocks. We are looking at the possibility of having a higher real neutral rate (theoretical equilibrium policy rate, adjusted for inflation, that neither stimulates nor restricts the economy) than we’ve had in the last 15+ years. This shift from ultra-low interest rates to sustained higher rates has far-reaching implications for the economy and markets. Here are a few of the themes we’ll be keeping a close eye on going forward:
